Jensen cocked an eyebrow, like he couldn’t comprehend Trey’s train of thought at all. “I didn’t have to convince him, Gibson. Our Weapon’s Master is loyal to all his men. That includes you. It’s just a bonus that your family’s connections could help with his end goal, as well.”

“What connections—” He cut off, bile immediately replacing his words as the door behind Jensen swung open and another man passed the threshold.

His heart fell, fear like he thought he’d never known filling his body at who stood before them, taking in the entire scene with wide, unbelieving eyes.

They were so completely fucked.

“Gibson? No, that’s not…that’s not possible.” His voice hit a higher pitch, his words stuttering out in utter shock as he stood frozen in the doorway, staring at him.

Walking around the statue-like man with a hand on his blade, like he was prepared to defend Trey if needed, Jensen came to stand between him and Eithan’s first-in-command, Wes fucking Coleman.

“What on Aleron is going on?”

“What do you mean?” Jensen asked, feigning innocence. “You’re the one who showed up unannounced.”

Trey’s mouth fell open. Coleman was the company he’d been talking about? He’d lured, not just any of Eithan’s guards, but his first-in-command there? What game was Jensen fucking playing at? Coleman would run right back to Eithan, and then Jensen would be right where he’d been, screaming for mercy.

“He’s dead. You’re dead,” Coleman continued, his eyes lingering on Trey’s eyepatch as he took a single step forward.

Trey raised his chin, desperately trying to hide his racing heart and the nausea pushing at his throat. “Whoever told you that, I wonder?”

At his words, Coleman’s face drained of color. “You were sentenced to death for treason. His Highness—”

“His Highness is a lying psychopath.”

In a blink, Coleman’s hand was on the pommel of his sword, knuckles white and face guarded. “Take care how you speak.”

“Or what?” Trey laughed, the sound coming out as psychotic as he’d just accused Eithan of being as his anger overrode his fear.

Regardless of when Eithan chose it, he was going to die no matter what. And Jensen, the gods damn idiot, had dug his own grave now. There was no point in rolling over for any of these assholes anymore.

He seethed. “Take care how I speak? About a man who prances about during the day, lying to his entire fucking continent, only to rip out eyes for fun at night? Because I sure as hell didn’t tie myself down and sink a blade under my—”

“Gods, stop.”

“What? You don’t like the truth about your prince?”

Coleman released his sword only to fist both hands at his sides. “You have no idea, absolutely none, about what His Highness has been through,” he said, voice low, but his eyes gave him away. His uncertainty.

Trey’s jaw clenched. “I promise you, I know a whole lot more than you think you do. And that man is a demon.”
