I wrap my arm around his waist as he settles next to me and buckles in, soaking up his warmth. He’s a furnace. “To their credit, we did pick a six-minute song.”

“ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ isn’t even the longest song on that album,” he says defensively, buckling me in, too, and wrapping an arm around me, hugging me close. “In my eyes, we showed them mercy.”

A fresh burst of our laughter echoes in the car as the driver pulls out and speeds through a yellow light. Jamie’s grip on me tightens. He double-checks my seat belt, an adorable frown knotting his features. His hair’s wild from headbanging with me at the end of the song, those chiseled cheekbones flushed pink from effort. He smells like sweat and rain and Jamie, and it’s that moment, right then, when I know, as surely as I know my name: I love him.

And I’m completely terrified. I’m terrified I’m every kind of wrong for him, that one day he’ll realize the fun fades but my weird lasts, and it’s not his kind of weird; that loving him will somehow end up hurting as badly as loving Tod did. That’s when I get really scared. Because I never loved Tod like this. I never let him in so far, never trusted him like I’ve trusted Jamie. Loving Jamie is the highest height, but God, at least with Tod the fall wasn’t fatal.

If anything happens to us, if this ends . . . it will crush me.

I squeeze Jamie hard, burying my face in his neck, hiding these new tears. Tears of relief. Happy tears. Terrified tears. It’s a deluge of feelings that rivals the downpour that bathes our taxi’s windows with sheets of rain.

“Bea,” Jamie says quietly, his hand running up and down my arm. “What is it?”

I glance up and we brush noses. Then mouths. I look at him, white shirt plastered to his body from the rain, water glistening on his skin. His eyes hold mine, then darken, his hand sliding down my arm, the slope of my waist, gently around my ass as he pulls me closer. I cling to his shirt, slide my leg over his. And then I pour into my kiss everything I’m too frightened to say. I tell him with my touch and my mouth and each breathless sigh what he makes me feel, how afraid and thrilled and wildly in love I am with him, the last person I would have ever thought would love me or that I would love.
