‘Oh, I’m sure she’d like that, Mrs Travers. Thank you. And thank you for your advice. I might take the book and show Mr Shepherd – you know, who used to be in the library van that comes round – and see what he makes of it.’
‘Good idea, love,’ said Betty, handing it back to Ellen. ‘Mebbe I’ll see you later.’
Ellen left Betty’s cottage and wandered up to the turn in the lane that led to her own home. She heard the sound of an approaching car and moved to the side as Mr Stellion’s unmistakably splendid vehicle sped towards her. Mr Stellion was driving, and in the front next to him sat Diana. Ellen held her hand up and gave a friendly wave. Mr Stellion acknowledged her but Diana looked straight ahead, her facial expression turning to one of fury as the car passed Ellen.
Oh dear, she’s obviously blaming us for what’s happened. So unfair!
Ellen walked slowly home, the book in her satchel. She felt half tempted to take it out and hurl it into the hedge bottom, so furious was she with Gina.
‘It’s no use getting cross, love.’ It was Edward coming towards her, reading her mind; he knew her so well and cared for her so much.
‘I know, Ed. But I’ve just seen Diana Stellion go past in the car and she made a big point of ignoring me even though I waved. She used to be so friendly.’
‘Aye, love, but she’s fooling herself if she’s being mean now. Her brother, James, and Gina are both wanted by the police – which of them does she really think started this lark with the stolen things? If she gives it any proper thought, she’ll see it’s not your fault what your sister gets up to with her brother.’
‘Dear Ed, how did you get to be so wise?’ Ellen said, cheering up. ‘I reckon you know everything.’
Edward threw his head back and laughed loudly. ‘Mebbe a bit about sheep, love, that’s all.’ He turned Ellen to him and wrapped his arms tightly around her. ‘I wish I were so clever I could tell you where your sister is, love,’ he whispered into her hair. ‘If only I did know, we’d get into the Land Rover and go and get her right now.’
‘Yes, love, I know we would. I just hope that day comes when we can.’
‘It will, Nell, I’m sure of it. Whatever happens, I’ll be there with you and we’ll face it together.’
