“This is the best birthday present I’ve ever received,” she said.

“You’re the best gift I’ve ever received. I love you.”

“I love you,” she whispered.

“Happy birthday.”

She’d been wrong just now because her heart could, she discovered, contain even more happiness.

“. . . in love you have delivered my life

from the pit of destruction,

for you have cast all my sins

behind your back.”

Isaiah 38:17 ESV

Discussion Questions

  1. The plot of Turn to Me was inspired by recent real-life stories of historic treasures discovered, as well as stories of treasures purposely left for others to track down. Becky could have written a romance novel without the treasure hunt element, but chose to include it. What did that element of the book add to the reading experience?
  2. Did you learn anything new while reading Turn to Me about running an animal shelter or the challenges inherent in reacclimating to life outside of prison?
  3. Becky considers Luke to be a “bad boy” hero type. If you fell in love with him alongside Finley, what was it about him that melted your heart?
  4. Becky let readers know early on that someone was following Luke and Finley. Why do you think she let you in on that? Who did you think that person might be?
  5. Where did the humor in this book come from?
  6. The theme of Turn to Me is embracing new beginnings. At first, it seems that only applies to Luke because Finley appears to be thriving. Later, we (and Finley) realize it applies to her, too. How did Becky explore this theme differently in Luke and Finley’s journeys?
  7. Did any scene make you emotional? If so, which one?
  8. Turn to Me is the final book of the MISTY RIVER ROMANCE series, which is bound together by the “Miracle Five.” Why do you think Becky chose to center her series on adults who’d suffered through a childhood tragedy?
  9. For Becky, one of the challenges of writing a three-book series is attempting to incorportate the six main characters into the other novels just enough—but not too much. If you read the other books, do you think she struck the right balance? If so, what methods did she use to do that?
  10. Every author has what we in the publishing world refer to as a “writer’s voice,” which encompasses the writer’s style, tone, uniqueness. How would you describe Becky’s writer’s voice?
