“Your blush says otherwise.” Andie leaned past Julia to wink at Kat. “It was totally a meet-cute.”
Julia ignored that. “My point is, we introduced ourselves. He knows who we are.”
“But he doesn’t know what any of us do for a living,” Andie argued.
“That’s true,” Julia admitted. “No thanks to you.” She gave her friend the stink eye.
“What did I do?”
“You dropped Kat’s ‘Take Me!’ key chain and almost blew my cover.”
“Oh!” Andie blinked, realization dawning. “That’s why you made up that poet shit. I was wondering what the heck you were going on about.”
“Poet shit?” Kat asked, moving to stand on the other side of Andie. She reapplied her lipstick, the same perfect shade of rose pink as her dress.
Julia glowered. “It was the best I could come up with in the moment.” Recalling the close call with keys, an idea suddenly popped into her brain and she brightened. “Actually, this works out perfectly.”
“It does?” Andie paused. “Why? Because I told him the key chain belonged to Kat?”
“Exactly.” Julia smiled with smug satisfaction.
“Well, it is my key chain.” Kat said. “Did you remember to lock the van?”
“No,” Andie said. “And I left the headlights on.”
“She’s kidding,” Julia assured Kat. “You’ve got nothing to worry about. And neither do I.” For once, something was going her way. “If word gets out there’s a reviewer from TrendList at the resort, we can easily steer the gossip toward you.” Julia glanced at her friend. “You don’t mind pretending to be me for a week, do you?”
Kat swept an arm around the luxurious bathroom and twirled. “I think I can handle it.”
“And if not, I’m happy to play understudy.” Andie slid off the counter. “Speaking of, I wonder when we find out what characters we’re going to be playing in this game.”
“How does that work?” Kat asked. “Do we get to make it up?”
Julia shook her head. “They’re assigned. There’s probably a packet of information we need to pick up at the front desk, or maybe at the concierge. I should have checked…”
“Oh!” Kat dropped her lipstick and ran from the bathroom.
Julia glanced at Andie, who shrugged and picked up the lipstick tube and began outlining her lips in pink.
Kat returned in a rush and plopped three folders on the bathroom counter. “They gave me these when I checked in.”
“Why didn’t you hand them to us with our room keys?” Andie asked, capping the lipstick and passing it back to Kat.
“I assumed it was the usual hotel junk. Maps, room service menus, spa coupons … Our names aren’t on them, just the room information.”
Andie picked up a folder. “Well, this one’s for you, Your Highness,” she said, giving Kat the folder labeled “Princess Suite.”
