“Dylan!” Andrew yells his name from the side of the church and waves his hand in the air, and I stop in my tracks because Caroline starts to shake beside me.
“Oh my God,” Caroline whispers. Andrew walks over to us, and you can tell he’s high as fuck. His jeans are hanging on his hips and have brown stains down the front of them. His once white shirt is two sizes too big, and looks yellow. His hair is stringy and so dirty it’s matted to his head. His eyes are so dilated they look almost black. His nails have dirt in them, and the sores on his arms are very apparent.
“Dylan,” he calls him, but Dylan doesn’t move from beside me. Everyone around us stops walking, and you can hear a pin drop. “What the fuck, Caroline?” he shouts when he gets close enough. “Are you trying to keep my son from me?” he hisses when he stands in front of her, and I notice that he’s wearing two different shoes, and one is three sizes bigger than the other.
I move myself in front of Caroline when I feel that he’s getting too close to her for my liking, and I suddenly feel Matthew at my side. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” he spews to me. “Trying to keep me from my kid?”
“Caroline,” I say, my eyes never leaving his. “Go inside.”
I look to the side at her and see she has tears streaming down her cheeks, and my mother is now by her side along with Karrie. Allison, Zoe, Zara, and Vivienne are trying to usher the kids away from this scene.
“Andrew,” Caroline finally says, shaking her head. “Not here.”
“Fuck you!” he shouts at her. “Fuck you and your perfect little attitude!” My blood is boiling, my hands shaking with anger.
“Dylan,” Caroline says, “let’s get into church.” She turns and leads Dylan away, who has his own tears rolling down his chin. He walks with his mother toward the church when Andrew jumps and shouts at them.
“Don’t you take him away from me.” Andrew tries to get to them, but I step in front of him, and he pushes my shoulder. “Fuck you, man.” His body odor is almost unbearable.
“She doesn’t want to see you,” I say, and he just leers at me as he watches Caroline walk up the steps to the church. Allison stands beside her, and my mother has her arm around Dylan’s shoulders as she looks back at the scene.
