“So I used the store’s petty cash. So the merch is worthless unless Danny here can find someone else to off-load it onto.” Eli shrugged.

“No.” Imogen shook her head. “You can’t do that. You didn’t do that.”

“He did, and we will,” said Daniella.

She was so sure of herself. So utterly unflappable that Imogen did the first thing that came to mind in order to just rattle the girl—

“You can go to hell, Cool Girl.” It was the only time Imogen had used the nickname to the girl’s face. Imogen watched as the shock registered across Daniella’s expressions.

Good. The girl deserved to be shook and rattled and jolted, after what she’d done.

“What did you call me?” Daniella uncrossed her arms. Stared the kind of stare that should have turned the floor to molten lava.

“Cool Girl. The Coolest Girl in the Fucking World.” Imogen wasn’t backing down. Despite the intimidation tactics. Despite the fear that was now fighting with the rage. Imogen was on a roll and would not be stopped. “Too cool to think about anyone else on the planet. Too cool to honestly feel something. Too cool to show yourself to the world. You sit behind your crossed arms and your snippy little catchphrases, and you throw everything you feel back onto everyone else so that nothing ever sticks to you. Must be nice to be above it all, Cool Girl. Must be nice to never have to feel anything.”

Imogen knew that last part wasn’t true, but she didn’t care. She could give as good as she’d gotten. She was heaving as she breathed. Her chest rose and fell like she had just run a mile, which, honestly, had to have been at least two years ago when she was forced to for that President’s Challenge in PE. Thank God she wasn’t a freshman anymore.

And Daniella—somehow calling her Cool Girl out loud had made Imogen stop calling her Cool Girl in her mind—just stared back at Imogen. Imogen watched, saw the way that shock and awe warred with rage and frustration on her features.

What the hell did Daniella have to be frustrated with?

Daniella pointed. “Get out of here, Azar.”

“With pleasure,” said Imogen, with a bow. “And when I do, I’m telling Jo what the hell is going on here.”

That set Daniella in motion. She grabbed at Imogen’s upper arm. “You wouldn’t dare.”

“Watch me.” And with that, Imogen wrenched her arm out of Daniella’s grasp, grabbed for the notebook off the desk, and swiftly exited onto the bookstore floor.
