But before Rinn could think too much on that, Eli smiled bright and wide. It should have been charming, but it was just honestly concerning to look at Eli grinning with all teeth and no animation or expression in his eyes.
“Everything cool?” Rinn couldn’t help but stare. Something was going on here.
“Fantastic, really super,” said Eli. “Bordering on superb.”
Had Rinn interrupted something? Rinn looked for clues that Eli and Daniella had been flirting or even hooking up. But nobody could kiss with two enormous boxes between them. Rinn ruled that out. Maybe they were—
“What are you doing here?” Daniella practically shouted the question. She was clearly trying to catch Rinn off guard, but she was still holding the box in her hands and still looking uncomfortable and overly cheery, and the shouting didn’t land the way it ought to have.
Rinn, who was, by rights, the worst liar in the world, said the plain truth. “I’m getting my phone.”
And then Rinn, who didn’t want to either ask or answer another question, moved quickly over to Jo’s desk, pulled her phone out of the drawer, and then brandished it for both Eli and Daniella to see. See, her movements said, just getting my phone. Nothing to see here, either. “Okay. I’ll just be. Going now. You guys, good luck with. Whatever it is.”
Rinn waved her hand over the general area of both of them. They were behaving very oddly. But then again, maybe so was Rinn.
“Thank you,” said Daniella in that overly cheerful tone. It was especially disconcerting after the shouting.
Rinn stopped and stared for a moment. Eli smiled extra wide again, and Rinn decided she didn’t want to know, not even a little bit.
Rinn breathed a sigh of relief when she exited the break room with her phone. She’d done it. She’d gotten hold of her phone. And at least Daniella hadn’t been actively horrible to her, even if she’d been super weird the entire time.
It was content time.
Rinn looked around the store. This was her second favorite part of what she did—spotting the best light, setting up the shot, really seeing the space from a fresh point of view. The front of the store was lit up beautifully. But it was that middle ground that had the most interesting light. The shadows that were cropping up from the lack of light in the back combined with the sun that was shining through the front of the store.
Gothic in the best sense of the word.
Rinn ducked into the art history and criticism shelves. It wasn’t the most interesting subject matter to her viewers, but she could definitely use this as a backdrop. She snapped a few photos for herself. Though she also wanted to film a quick video to see how the shot lined up.
