Harvey was, of course, prepared for this. “Just because I won’t give you an autograph before all the other fans who will be in line tonight, that doesn’t mean you have to get in a snit with me, little girl.” Then he turned and rolled his eyes—oh so performatively for Jo—and said, “Fangirls,” as though it were under his breath.
But he knew it had been audible. They all knew. They had all heard.
That was when Imogen had stopped holding Rinn back and took her own step forward. She got right up in Brock Harvey’s face, which startled even Brock Harvey. Imogen pointed directly at his chest without touching him. The threat of her was plain and obvious. And then Imogen spoke in clear, commanding tones that Rinn didn’t know anybody their age could use. Didn’t know anybody her age who had it in them. “This isn’t about a fucking autograph.”
Well, that had gotten everyone’s attention.
That is, if Rinn kicking down the door hadn’t already gotten their attention, which it definitely had.
“Somebody tell me what is going on, and somebody tell me right now.” That was Jo. She was looking at Imogen, her body tensed. Then she was looking at Rinn, who felt as out of control as she ever had in her life. And then she took in the sight of Daniella, stuck in the doorway, unmoving and staring blankly. Jo looked over to Harvey.
Harvey opened his mouth, but Jo held up her hand. She wasn’t having any of him at the moment. “Not you.”
Rinn thought about explaining herself, but then she realized, it wasn’t her story to tell. She looked at Imogen, who in turn looked at Daniella.
Daniella nodded. Took a deep breath. She took a step into the room, steadying herself on one of the old wicker chairs with the hideously printed cushions. Her words came out in a stream of truth. In a confession. No, a declaration. “That creep tried to come on to me while I was alone in the break room. He then grabbed me and tried to pin me down when I said no. Obviously, I had to defend myself, so I stepped on him to get out of his reach and then ran like hell. Rinn found me before I could run all the way out the room. She saw a lot of it.”
“Whoa, your crazy employee attacked me. She stomped on my foot. Ask the little fangirl one. She walked in right as the crazy one attacked me. That’s what I came in here trying to tell you.”
Jo held up her hand again, turned, and gave Harvey a real mean stare. “I said shut it, Harvey. And I meant it.”
Harvey went dead silent, like he hadn’t expected that response from another authority figure.
