Trevor Beeson’s Around the Church in Fifty Years (SCM Press, 2007, mentioned above) gives a lively overview of the main trends in the Church from the 1950s to the 1990s. We know that in 1950 James, as a man searching for a God who had seemingly abandoned him, was reading Paul Tillich’s sermons (The Shaking of the Foundations, Scribner, 1948); I like to think that he also read John A. T. Robinson’s Honest to God (SCM Press, 1963) during the 1960s, and that perhaps, after he found his Maker again, Yes to God by Alan Ecclestone (Darton, Longman and Todd, 1975) later in the 1970s. But that lies in his happy future, beyond the end of Think of Me.
