  38. Why I Wrote The Work Wife by Alison B. Hart

Zanne looked at the computer screen. There was the search window with Phoebe’s name and the latest keywords she’d tried. Suddenly Zanne knew where to look. Warrior Bride was the film Phoebe had always wanted to make, even Ted said so. He knew how important it was to her. Zanne searched “Phoebe + Warrior Bride.”

A subset of twenty emails filled the screen. Some were dated the year after the assault. Others were more recent. Zanne read through each one, occasionally glancing up to make sure no one else was coming. What was amazing was how little Ted had had to do or say and, in each instance, the deed was done. People came to him with their arguments against working with Phoebe already fully formed. All Ted had to do was refuse to disagree. Everyone wanted to please the King of Hollywood.

Zanne pressed print on the important emails, fetching each one from the printer immediately, the pages still hot. Then she searched for and printed one last email, the one she’d sent Ted after calling Caitlyn to let him know it was handled—Thanks, you’re a lifesaver!—Sure, happy to help!

The door to the cottage opened and Julia quick-walked to her cubicle between Zanne’s and Steve’s. “Ted’s in his office,” she said to Zanne, putting on her headset and sitting down.

“Meeting with Jane?”

“No. Everyone went with Holly to her office.”

“What?” They were in a full-scale crisis, and Holly was the one giving orders?

“I heard Peter Leo is flying out on the red-eye,” Julia said.

“Peter Leo?” Zanne said. “Peter Leo who argues cases before the Supreme Court.”

“Yeah. Erin’s in the meeting with everyone right now. I’m sure she can give you a download later.”

Zanne could only blink. In the time it had taken her to get back to her desk, they’d leapfrogged over several layers of strategy. McShane Devilbiss handled employment matters for the Stablers. Sommers and Feil handled their foundation and trust. Peter Leo was who you called when your life was on the line.

Julia shrugged. “Don’t ask me. It didn’t seem like Ted wanted anyone around, but you should probably check on him. Just in case.”

Had Phoebe scrambled his brain that much, or was the power center of the Stabler estate shifting to the second floor of the main house?

Julia pushed a button on her headset and said, “Holly Stabler’s office, thank you for holding.” She looked up at Zanne impatiently, and Zanne put her hands in the air as if to say, I’m going.
