  38. Why I Wrote The Work Wife by Alison B. Hart

“Sure.” Jane unlocked her phone. “I have it here, just a sec. It all looked fine to me, but if you want to talk about anything specific, maybe the sponsorships or the theme for the party—which looks amazing, by the way. Oh my God, Sophie the giraffe is priceless!—I’m sure we can coordinate on that. Here you go.”

Holly took the phone and read through Serafina’s questions, trying to figure out where the trapdoors were, if inquiries about prenatal health and infant mortality could somehow give way to a gotcha moment. But no, it was all what Holly would have expected.

“Someone from On Set came up to me at the marina today. She had some unusual questions about Caitlyn Alvarez.”

“James mentioned it. I talked to the producers there. It was just an overeager PA trying to get ahead. They pulled her back. They know that you and Ted are an open book, and anything they need, they can just ask me.”

Holly couldn’t bring herself to say Phoebe’s name out loud.

“Any other...loose ends?” she asked instead.

“Self Magazine reached out again about a cover story, but we agreed that we’d wait until you have something to promote. We can revisit that, though?”

“No. That’s okay. Let’s leave that one be. Anything else?”

“I can check with my team to be sure, but nope, I don’t think so. Holly, we’d be happy to put together a new media plan for you and Ted if things are feeling stagnant. There are so many avenues we can explore these days, with social media, podcasts, and different kinds of streaming partnerships. We’d love to work with you on some new directions.”

“Oh, thanks. I’ll give that some thought. Everything moves so fast these days—as my children keep reminding me. I saw a crazy story online this morning about a rich couple here in LA looking for a chief of staff? Now everyone’s trying to figure out who they are. I wondered...this is silly...but...if anyone thought it might be us? I know we have a lot of help—not that we’re that demanding, I hope!”

“Oh. Um. Yeah, I saw that story. But no. No reach-outs.”

Jane’s neck began to flush red, and Holly realized that in asking the question, she’d confirmed what Jane would never have dared ask directly.

“I think we’re in good shape tonight, Holly, honestly. Leave the worrying to me. That’s what you’re paying me for, right?”

“Okay. You’re right,” Holly said, making herself smile. “Thanks, again.”
