“No,” Zanne said. She tried to clear the lump in her throat, but it was useless. “Nothing that hasn’t already been reported on. She has a settlement with Stabler Studios and an NDA. The reporter seemed to think there was something shady about Caitlyn being cut from the Stabler table at the Getty Gala last year.”
Jane frowned. “They were counterparties in a legal action, right? Not the best time to socialize.”
The words brought Zanne soothing relief, like aloe on a sunburn. Encouraged, she pressed on.
“She was also looking for background on Phoebe Lee, who’s actually here at the party tonight.”
“Phoebe Lee? Why do I know that name?”
“She worked with Ted on the first couple of Starfighter films. They were a couple, too—obviously way before he met Holly. Of course, I just said no comment. It’s up to Ted if he wants to talk about that, and I doubt he does.”
“Right, he’s so private.”
The reporter’s question had specifically been about Phoebe’s history with Jerry, but that was Phoebe’s story to tell.
“Well, okay. None of this sounds too terrible,” Jane said. “Caitlyn has an NDA, so if she’s got sour grapes about the settlement she signed, there’s not much she can do about it. And if you’re telling me Phoebe’s here at the party tonight, then I’m assuming things aren’t too acrimonious between her and Ted?”
Zanne swallowed and smiled to keep from wincing. The ache in her throat was still there. Was there acrimony between Ted and Phoebe? Yes. But in the pauses and silences of their meeting today, in that moment when he had called Phoebe—what was it? Mole? Noel?...no, Mols, like the inscription on the photograph—Zanne had overheard the residue of something real. Something like heartbreak.
“No, I don’t think so.”
“Okay, good. I’ll talk to my partners and we’ll sketch out a backup plan just in case. But I already talked to the producer, and they reassigned the reporter. I’ll check in with Serafina and feel her out, but I really don’t think she’s looking to become the next Ronan Farrow. This is a feel-good story. Hollywood giving back. She gets it.”
“Okay, yeah. Sorry if I overreacted.”
“No problem. I always appreciate the heads-up. You guys are keeping us busy today!”
Jane turned on her Ferragamos and left. Zanne had done her duty, pointing out a potential land mine to a professional minesweeper. It was remarkable the machinery that existed to protect Ted, and from whom? Phoebe and Caitlyn? Two women just trying to do their jobs? Zanne couldn’t stop thinking about the call she’d made to Caitlyn, the way Caitlyn had sighed when Zanne stopped talking, as if she recognized all the things she was about to lose, not just a seat at a party but her name.
