  62. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

‘Go on then, turn it on!’ Naomi settled down on the sofa in front of the TV. She watched as the screen burst into life, laughing as Morgan sang along to the theme tune. Within minutes, the celebrity couple were introducing their first guest.

Dawn looked beautiful in her heels and fitted blue dress. Given her age at the time of her parents’ murders, no charges had been brought against her. Due to the quantity of drugs she’d been on, she was cleared of any wrongdoing when it came to covering up their deaths. It wasn’t in the public interest to pursue a case against a child who had been subjected to years of abuse.

Naomi watched the interview with interest; it was one of many Dawn had given. She had found her niche in life, being a voice for child victims of domestic abuse. She’d been scheduled to speak at TED Talks, all expenses paid, all over the world. There was a book in the making, and she’d worked as a consultant for Ed’s movie, which told the story of her life. She had finally got what she wanted – to expand her life past Nighbrook and beyond.

The same could not be said for Joanne, who had been charged with aiding and abetting, among other things. The trial was ongoing, and given her age, it was likely that she and the other implicated villagers would be handed suspended sentences rather than prison terms.

Naomi shuddered at the thought of setting foot in Nighbrook again. She was done with village life and small-town mindsets. She returned her attention to Dawn, who oozed confidence as she spoke. She had bounced back from her ordeal like a rubber ball. It may have taken a village to raise her, but Dawn was finally going it alone.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

It doesn’t matter how many books I write, I always find the acknowledgments the toughest page. I try to limit myself, but there are so many people to thank. I’ll start with you, my valued readers. I could never have left my job to write full-time if it weren’t for you supporting my work. I’m also grateful to the bloggers and book club members who exercise such generosity of spirit when it comes to reading, reviewing and sharing my books. A positive Amazon review feels like a warm hug to an author and is truly appreciated.

I’ve dedicated this book to my wonderful agent – it’s long overdue! Huge thanks also to the entire team at the Madeleine Milburn literary agency – it’s a privilege to work with you.
