  62. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Morgan cleaned her glasses with the sleeve of her jumper before peering at the screen. ‘She does look pissed off. But that could be over anything.’

‘I don’t think it is. Lloyd’s staring at Grace, animated. There’s something there. He has feelings for her. More than neighbourly, if you ask me.’

‘Eww . . . you’re not saying he’s a . . .’ Morgan’s face twisted in disgust.

‘No, I’m not.’ Naomi raised her hand before Morgan could say the word. Such accusations would get them both into more trouble than they could handle. ‘But we need to be careful around him. Whatever he was, Joanne was aware of it. Here, watch this.’ She pressed play again. As her husband met her gaze, Joanne forced a smile. His grin met hers before he joined in with the song. ‘Now look,’ Naomi said, fast-forwarding the clip to later in the day. She watched as the children danced, their faces alight. ‘They’re leaving now,’ Naomi said, checking she had Morgan’s attention. As Joanne waved to the children, Lloyd dropped on to one knee.

‘Bye bye, sweetheart,’ Lloyd said, opening his arms to take Grace in a bear hug. He paused to stroke her hair, kissing her on the forehead. As he drew away, the camera panned to the crowd. Naomi pressed the pause button.

‘I wish I could zoom in,’ she said, ‘but you can see enough of Joanne’s face to know she’s not happy about that.’

‘She’s not, is she?’ Morgan agreed.

Naomi felt a small sense of triumph as she turned to her with conviction. ‘Whatever happened to the Harpers, Lloyd is at the heart of it all.’

Morgan tugged on the ends of her hair, as she sometimes did when she was thoughtful. ‘But other people must know. They would have suspected something. Why would they hush this up?’

Naomi nodded in agreement. ‘He has some kind of hold over the villagers. I don’t know what it is, but I’m bloody well going to find out.’ She paused as a thought occurred. ‘Whoever was holding that camera must have been suspicious too. I’ve made a list of all the people at Grace’s party. The only person who should have been in the shot but wasn’t was Martin, Grace’s dad. Maybe Martin had his suspicions, which was why he was filming them so closely. It could have been his way of keeping an eye on them both.’

‘What about Susan’s sister, Petunia? She seems to know what happened.’

‘True,’ Naomi agreed, finishing off her coffee. ‘But I don’t think she was at the party. From what I’ve heard, Petunia and Susan didn’t get along. Susan waved at the camera, she looked happy. Relaxed.’

‘Or it could be nothing,’ Morgan piped up. ‘Joanne might have been pissed off with Lloyd over something else.’
