‘And then he spun me around, pushed me against a wall and—’ Gemma stopped. Tears ran down her face. ‘I can’t … I don’t know why I didn’t … and then he just …’

RECORDS OF INTERVIEW

Record of Conversation between Detective Senior Constable Antigone Pollard and Noah Shepherd conducted at the residence of Noah Shepherd, 18 Dellacourt Ave, Toorak, Tuesday, 2 January, 10.15 am

Look, I don’t even know why you’re here. I swear I didn’t rape her. This is crazy. We were inside the pub and we were dancing and I told her to come outside with me. We went outside, to a park, and, you know … Be more specific? Well … um … we were kissing and, you know, I put my hand up her skirt. I mean, she pushed my hand away but then I did it again and she didn’t push my hand away. I honestly thought she was up for it. She never said anything. She seemed a bit upset afterwards, but how was I to know?

I share an apartment with Gemma Watson and on New Year’s Eve we went out clubbing. We went to a couple of places but they were duds, then we went to the Gun Alley Nightclub. We got there sometime after 10 pm, I think. Gemma bought us some drinks then this guy asked her to dance. Me and our other friend, Rosie, got talking to some other guys. Not long after that, Gemma came up to us. She was crying and really upset. We left straight away but she wouldn’t tell us what happened. This morning, she finally told me she’d been raped by that guy in a park. I told her to go straight to the police. Looking back, it all happened so quickly. One minute she’s dancing, and the next minute she’s all upset. I reckon she would have had maybe six drinks over a couple of hours. Gemma doesn’t usually drink and she was definitely sort of drunk, but not too drunk to know she’d been raped.
