‘The stables, then,’ Posy said. ‘That’s where she was last.’

Rosalind eschewed the river path, and led them across the grass towards the house. ‘So. You saw Clementine leave the notes?’

‘Well, not all of them, obviously. But I was behind you two heading into the house, remember? I had to go park up Susie, and then Marcus and I were … reminiscing about old times. So you were both in your rooms by the time I came up. I saw Clementine pushing an envelope under my door, but she didn’t see me. I imagine she’d already done your two by then.’

‘And you didn’t think this was relevant?’ Rosalind said, through gritted teeth.

Caro shrugged. ‘Relevant, yes, but not necessarily important. I mean, if you had notes you wanted delivered to somebody staying at Aldermere this weekend, what would you do?’

‘Give them to Clementine to pass on,’ Posy guessed.

‘Exactly.’

‘Which means she must know who sent them in the first place.’ Rosalind shot another glare at Caro without breaking stride. ‘Which means we could have been asking her instead of playing Guess Who in the folly for the last while.’

‘Unless they were handed to her through a volunteer, or left at the desk with a note, or—’

‘Still,’ Posy, aware that Rosalind’s cheeks were reddening, interrupted Caro. ‘Speaking to Clementine is a good place to start, right? Whether this is real blackmail or a stupid prank, I want to know who is behind it.’

‘Marcus,’ Caro said, stubbornly. ‘I told you, it’s got to be Marcus. No one else could have had those photos. And this is exactly the sort of thing he would find amusing.’ Posy wondered what Caro’s photos had been pictures of, that Marcus would have them and find them funny, but she didn’t ask. If they could put an end to this without having to admit what they’d each been blackmailed about, that would be ideal in her book.

‘It could have still been Clementine herself, though,’ Rosalind argued. ‘If Marcus had the photos she could have taken them easily enough.’

‘But why?’ Posy asked.

‘Money, I imagine. Marcus doesn’t seem the sort to pay a fantastic salary, and like Caro said, everyone believes that celebrities are loaded.’

‘Then why not meet us?’ Caro raised that single eyebrow again.

‘She could have been held up doing the murder mystery,’ Posy reasoned. ‘There were still investigators arriving when I passed here on my way to the folly.’

‘She probably had a copy of the script, too,’ Rosalind added. ‘The dinner tonight is based on the one in the movie, so they’d have needed it for that.’

‘Marcus or Clementine,’ Posy said, as they reached the stables. ‘Blackmail or prank?’

‘Let’s go and find out,’ Rosalind said.

All the vintage car enthusiasts must have found somewhere else to be because the stable yard was empty except for the display vehicles when they arrived.
