Oh. That probably meant something, didn’t it?

‘I think we should find Libby,’ she said, and Caro nodded.

‘I’ve been trying!’ Posy said. ‘She’s nowhere. We were talking about it while we waited for you. Caro and I think we need to go back over the last couple of days and block out Clementine’s movements.’

Caro jumped in. ‘You know, figure out where she was and when and hope it gives us the lead we need to solve this thing.’

‘Sounds like a plan,’ Rosalind said. ‘And if we’re lucky, it might lead us to Libby, too.’

Hopefully before DCI Larch found her. Because Rosalind was almost certain that whatever Libby knew, it was what they needed to know for this whole thing to make sense.

After all, she’d written the literal script for this weekend.

‘So, where do we start?’ Posy asked.

Rosalind jumped up. ‘On the first page. Come on.’

‘We need to get inside Clementine’s head,’ Caro said, as they stared at the frontage of Aldermere House. ‘Imagine every interaction she had with others from her point of view.’

‘Find her motivation.’ Posy’s mouth stretched in a half-smile. ‘Well. At least we’ve had practice at that.’

‘I reckon this whole thing centred around Clementine somehow,’ Caro said. ‘I mean, she was the first one killed, wasn’t she? She knew our secrets, and either she was trying to blackmail us with them, or warn us about someone else planning to.’

‘The Post-it note on the script.’ Posy scrabbled around in her bag and pulled it out. ‘“Should we warn them?” You think Libby was the other side of that we?’

‘It was her script,’ Caro said, with a shrug.

‘We’d better get started.’ Before Larch caught them up. ‘So, everyone arrived on Saturday morning and Clementine was here to greet them. What happened next?’

‘We met Marcus,’ Posy answered promptly. ‘He was kind of skeevy with Clementine, which made me wary of him.’

‘Did you notice anything between Clementine and Libby?’ Rosalind asked.

‘No. Nothing to suggest they knew each other. Then you came out, and then Caro arrived, and Clementine showed us all inside and she took me up to my room.’ Posy stepped forward, up the stairs to the house, and into the hallway.

Caro followed her. ‘Did she say anything strange, or that stood out?’

Posy shook her head. ‘Mostly we talked about my phone. How the family didn’t want anyone taking photos inside, so Marcus set up this immersive experience thing.’

They climbed the stairs to the China Room, still following in Clementine’s footsteps.

‘She must have slipped the note under your door after she left you here.’ Caro pointed to the door of her own room, next to Posy’s. ‘She was just leaving mine when I got up here from parking Susie in the stables.’
