‘I can solve that one.’ Rosalind’s mind filled with the memory of Clementine’s bloated face bobbing on the edge of the reeds. ‘It was still around her neck. I saw it.’ It had rested on the shining white skin of her chest, glinting in the moonlight.

She couldn’t have forgotten that if she tried.

‘Did it look like this?’ Posy shoved the paperback book in her hands under Rosalind’s nose.

It was the biography of Lettice Davenport she’d been reading the other day. She held it open at a full-page photo of Letty, wearing that same hat that Caro had passed around the study only two days ago, even if it felt much longer. And around her neck was a heavy, silver locket, engraved with flowers.

Rosalind closed her eyes and swallowed. ‘That’s the one.’

‘So, do we think it’s a fake – another replica, like the magnifying glass?’ Caro asked.

‘Hard to tell,’ Posy said, frowning. ‘It could be, I suppose. Especially if Clementine was involved with Marcus’s business arrangements.’

‘But if we assume it isn’t, and that it has something to do with her death, the question becomes … how did Clementine get her hands on Letty’s locket?’

‘And when?’ Posy flicked through the photo section in the middle of her book. ‘She’s wearing it in every photo before the mid-forties, but never afterwards. So what happened to it?’

‘Oooh, good question!’ Caro sounded gleeful at the idea of another mystery to solve.

Rosalind was afraid she’d already solved it.

‘Tastes change,’ Posy said thoughtfully. ‘Or maybe it had bad connotations of a love affair gone wrong. Hugh was talking about enough of those at dinner.’

‘Or maybe she put it away and forgot about it, and the family found it again after her death.’ Caro looked meaningfully at Rosalind, who sighed.

‘You mean, you think Hugh gave it to her.’ Rosalind bit her lip before continuing. ‘I told you Isobel thinks Hugh and Clementine were having an affair. But it’s more than that. She’s afraid he had something to do with her death.’

‘That’s what you didn’t want to tell us this morning.’ Caro gave her an astute look. ‘You talked to him. What do you think?’

‘He’s hiding something,’ Rosalind admitted. ‘I don’t know what. I pushed him on seeing him and Clementine together in the Murder Spiral, but he claimed they’d just bumped into each other. And then Larch showed up before I could get any more from him.’

‘But he could have given her the locket,’ Posy said. ‘That much is clear.’

Rosalind nodded. ‘They met up in London, Isobel thinks, at least once.’

‘And how do you feel about that?’ Caro’s eyes were wary, like she was waiting for Rosalind to explode. Maybe burn some fetching wardrobe items, like she would have done.

But Rosalind couldn’t seem to feel anything much at all.
