‘You thought your ex wanted to get back together?’ Caro guessed. After all, she knew about stupid post break-up behaviour. Marcus was proof of that.
‘Yeah.’ Posy sighed. ‘Apparently my desperate need to be loved was stronger than two rounds of rehab, two and a half years of sobriety, and a hell of a lot of counselling.’
‘Maybe not,’ Rosalind said. ‘I mean, you’re here, sober, aren’t you? So you slipped up. We’ve all done that before. We just have to pick ourselves up and move on.’
Caro gave her a look. ‘That’s surprisingly generous of you, Rosalind. Kind, even.’
Rosalind sniffed. ‘I have my moments. Just not often around you.’
‘The point is,’ Posy said, loudly, drawing them back to the matter at hand. ‘I would pick myself up and start over. Except Marcus and Anton had a photographer waiting outside when I left, so now there are photos out there just waiting to be shared with the world.’ Posy ran a hand through her hair, dislodging a clip. ‘He was planning to leak the photos if I didn’t screw up all on my own soon enough. He figured that kind of scandal would be enough to get the family to pull out of the movie all together.’
‘He really wants out of that film, doesn’t he?’ Caro said. Funny, when almost everyone else wanted in.
‘Those were the photos that you got sent yesterday?’ Rosalind asked, and Posy nodded.
Caro saw what Rosalind was getting at, almost immediately. ‘So Clementine must have taken them from Marcus, same as mine. And, presumably, Rosalind’s.’
‘That’s what I figured.’ Posy’s eyes were wide as she looked up at them at last. ‘Marcus must have been planning to blackmail us too, and Clementine sent us the notes as a warning. But why?’
‘And who did she write that Post-it note to?’ Rosalind asked. ‘It wouldn’t have been Marcus.’
‘Which means, if we’re right about this, that someone else here knows what’s going on,’ Caro finished. ‘But who?’
Rosalind and Posy returned blank looks, and Caro sighed.
‘We need to talk to Clementine, family emergency or not.’ She had a sneaking suspicion that Marcus’s assistant knew exactly what was going on at Aldermere that weekend. Which was probably why she’d left. ‘I’ll get her number from Juliette and we can call from the house phone. But first …’ She gave Rosalind a meaningful look.
‘All right, all right.’ Rosalind tapped her perfectly polished fingernails against the arm of the bench, filling the air with an annoying, tinny rhythm. Caro wanted to ask her to stop, but she wanted to hear her secrets more, so she stayed quiet. ‘I’ve been having an affair with Hugh for the last thirty years. The photos showed us together in London, kissing, some time last year. Is that what you want to hear?’
