  37. Excerpt The Tangle of Awful

Harp pulls his phone from his pocket and holds up the screen. He pushes play and I’m shown the video of my classroom door. The same video Levi took and tried to blackmail me with.

“I have to ask, Mr. Park, is this your voice in the recording?” Summers frowns at me. “Lying won’t help your case here. We’re just trying to clarify some important points here.”

“Callum,” Willa warns. “Don’t say any—”

“It’s me and Willa.” I lift my chin. “My student.”

To their credit, neither cop flinches.

“She’s eighteen. We didn’t pursue any romantic involvements until she was of age.” I level Summers with a hard glare. “We didn’t do anything illegal.”

“I can see where you’d have that understanding,” Summers says, frowning, “but this was recorded on the device of a minor. As you can see, this complicates things, Mr. Park.”

Fuck.

Before I can utter a reply, Hugo bursts in through the door. He’s slightly disheveled, but his expression is fierce. My brother is a politician second and an attorney first.

“John, Riley,” Hugo greets, a million-dollar smile on his face. “So good to finally put two names to faces. Chief Glenn has nothing but great things to say about both of you.”

I don’t miss the way either of them puffs up at the mention of their superior’s name.

“Carey and I go way back. Did you know she used to babysit me when I was a kid?” Hugo asks. “How’s her new grandbaby anyway? Marla was it?”

Harp laughs. “That little girl is so cute, but she puked all over Summers’s suit when Carey brought her to the station for a visit.”

“I’ll have to pop in and see Carey someday soon. Catch up on everything,” Hugo says, never losing his megawatt smile. “Let her show me baby pics.” He winks at Harp. “I’m really sorry you both had to get involved in this…situation.”

Both detectives straighten their spines again, remembering they’re working, not having social hour.

“We’re just doing our jobs. Investigating what’s brought to us,” Summers says slowly. “Just gathering statements at this point.”

Hugo nods. “As fascinating as it is to some that my brother is dating a much younger woman, we all know what this is about.” He sighs as though it’s all his fault. “My campaign really has brought out the worst in people. They’re going after my family. Though we knew they would, it still hurts. But sending an underage kid to do the dirty work? That’s low, even for Mr. Paulson.”

I glance over at Willa and her eyes widen. I’m not sure how Hugo is going to pull us out of this mess, but he seems confident enough.
