- Excerpt The Tangle of Awful
Before I can second-guess it, I call an old friend.
“Lieutenant Campbell,” Sloane greets in a bored tone.
She’s Park Mountain’s very own cheerleader turned cop. Since she’s a local sweetheart, she gets a lot of crap and is never taken seriously, but I consider her a friend of the family. And since she’s best friends with my “stepmother,” she’s really the only person at the station I can trust to keep our family’s business out of the news.
“I’d like to report a party. A bunch of students drinking.”
Sloane’s chuckle is throaty. I always thought she’d be suited for country singing or something with her velvety voice. “Seriously, Callum?”
Though she finds this humorous, I don’t. “The twins are there. If this gets out…”
“The twins? As in Gemma too?”
I knew that would grab her attention.
“I saw some pictures on Instagram. It’s only a matter of time before it gets back to Dad. And with Hugo’s campaign, it’s just best if you bring them home.”
“I’m on call. If I go get them, I’ll have to bring them in to the station first.”
Not ideal because of how this town likes to talk, but quite okay in my quest for petty revenge. Willa hurt me, but I’m not some teenage boy like I was when Jamie hurt me. This time, I can hurt back.
“Do whatever you have to do. Just keep it quiet.”
She sighs heavily. “I told Jamie she has to let Gemma loose every now and again or it’s going to bite her in the ass because she’ll rebel in a big way.”
“Well, the time has come. Call me when I can come get them.”
We hang up and I throw on some clothes. It’s hard to fathom that just fifteen minutes ago I was aching over how much I missed Willa. Now, I’m dreading the moment I’ll see her. Will she lie to my face? Will she cry and tell me she’s sorry like Jamie did all those years ago? Whatever she does, I’ll be immune to it. I’m done with putting my heart on the line for someone to utterly destroy it. Fucking done.
Fifteen kids were arrested tonight. Every single one of them is a student of mine. When I’d arrived to pick up my group, all fifteen avoided my icy glare.
Good.
I hope they all feel like shit for getting busted. They don’t know I was the snitch, but I’m not opposed to telling them. It’s not like they’d expect anything less. I’m not one to put up with bullshit in or out of the classroom.
