Chapters (11)
She lay for a long time thinking about what had happened, then rising she went to the bathroom to bathe and dress.
She had nothing to wear except the entari in which she had come aboard and which Lord Castleford had told her was indecent.
The only alternatives were the turquoise velvet caftan, which was far too warm, the one lined with sable on which she had rested in the trunk and several gossamer garments like the one she had worn last night embroidered with diamonds and pearls.
With nothing beneath them Yamina thought that they would be even more indecent in the daytime than the entari. So she put the entari on and searched in the trunk for something with which to fasten the gauze chemise at the neck.
It was that which had shocked Lord Castleford because it was open to the waist.
Fortunately she found that decorating the little round talpock she had worn on her head was a pearl and topaz brooch, which matched her girdle and stomacher clasp.
She took the brooch from the hat and pinned it to her chemise high at the neck. And in a further effort to appear more respectable she arranged her hair at the back of her head in a large chignon.
It was very difficult to do as she had no pins, but she managed with ribbons and the effect was, she hoped, more demure and ladylike than when her hair was falling over her shoulders.
She was dressed when Jenkins came into the cabin bringing her breakfast.
“His Lordship’s compliments, miss,” he said, “and he asked me to tell you that he has been invited to breakfast with the Captain.”
As he spoke, Jenkins laid a clean cloth on the table and set down a tray on which there was coffee and a covered dish.
Yamina felt it would be impossible to eat, for she still had a strange constriction in her throat when she thought of Lord Castleford and what had happened last night.
But because Jenkins was present and she felt that it might seem ungracious not to eat anything after he had taken so much trouble, she played with the toast and honey which he had also brought on the tray.
“Will it disturb you, miss, if I tidy the cabin?” the valet enquired.
“No, of course not,” Yamina replied.
Jenkins lifted up the cushions on which Lord Castleford had lain last night and Yamina saw that there was also a mattress, which he had procured in some magic manner of his own.
Having made her bed, he laid the mattress underneath it, while the extra cushions which went on top were concealed by the mosquito net.
“It’s just in case anyone pays his Lordship a visit, miss,” Jenkins explained. “It never pays to be ‘caught napping’!”
“No, indeed!” Yamina agreed.
“Anything else I can get you, miss?” Jenkins asked a little later when he had tidied the bathroom.
