SUPPLEMENTARY NOTES

A Note on the ‘Serving Dinner’ Lazzo

The ‘Serving Dinner’ lazzo should try and include the rest of the players as much as possible, some of whom can play the zanni mask. In Goldoni’s original, Beatrice and Florindo were being served their meals in separate rooms. In this version both characters sit at separate tables on opposite sides of the playing space. This scene can be described as one big choreographed lazzo, made up of several other smaller lazzi. The following suggested lazzi and games could be explored in the rehearsal process to develop the scene:

Keeping the masters apart at all costs.

Near misses with Beatrice and Florindo almost seeing each other.

Manhandling the masters. Truffaldino forces them to sit down, turn around or stand up et cetera, in an effort to avoid them seeing each other.

Eating. Truffaldino makes up excuses to try each dish as it comes out (i.e. it may be too hot or too cold, or worse, poisonous—therefore he must try it for his master).

The bossy servant. Truffaldino asserts his status by bossing around the other zanni.

Strategically placing various props to avoid the masters seeing each other.

The echo. One master hears the other master calling ‘Truffaldino’ and Truffaldino convinces them that no-one else is calling them, it’s just that the room has an echo.

Throwing things around.
