  38. About the Author

After a two-day whirlwind of interviews and a segment on the network’s morning cooking talk show, It was time for Kelly to get back to the real world.

Brenda was waiting for her at the car. “This is where I say goodbye. Here’s your cell phone back, and the hotel will shuttle you to the airport when you’re ready. It’s been such a treat working with you.”

“Thank you for everything. I couldn’t have gotten through this without you.”

“Thank you,” Brenda said. “I get a bonus for you winning, and you’ve been the easiest contestant I’ve ever worked with. I’m so glad you won.” She glanced over at Andrew, who was talking to someone on the phone. “He’s great too. Both of you. I’d love to hear what’s going on with the two of you in a few months.”

Kelly let out a nervous giggle.

“He’s pretty awesome,” Brenda continued.

“I’m afraid. He broke my heart once, you know.”

“Don’t be afraid. He’s sweet. Cute. Generous. A great cook. What more could a girl want?” She pulled a large envelope from her portfolio. “These are a few mementos from the show I thought you’d enjoy.”

“You didn’t have to do that.”

“I wanted to. I won’t be surprised if they have you both back very soon. If they do, I hope they call me in to assist.”

“I’ll request you,” Kelly said as she got in the car.

Andrew finally hung up from his call and stopped to chat with Brenda before he got into the car.

“Ready to go?” he said to Kelly, patting her on the leg.

“I don’t want this to end.” She stared with longing at him. “My flight leaves at nine tonight.”

“I know.” Andrew massaged her neck. “You’ve got to be exhausted.”

“I am.” She rolled her neck side-to-side. “That feels good.”

“Why don’t we drop you off at your hotel first? Get a nap in, and I’ll come back over around five.”

“That sounds good.”

Andrew leaned in toward the driver. “Can you drop Kelly off first?”

“Yes, sir.”

When they pulled up in front of her hotel, Andrew slid out and held the door for her. “Sleep well.”

“I know I will. I’ll see you in a little while?”

“Definitely.”

She waved as she walked away.

“Kelly. One more thing.” He jogged over to her side. “I’ve made some big mistakes, but I want to make that up to you. I know I’ll have to earn your trust again, and it’s a long row to hoe, but I’m up for the task.”

She held her hand up like a traffic cop. “Let’s just enjoy this time and leave the past where it belongs.”

His jaw relaxed. “I like the sound of that.”
