Many thanks to the talented burrito makers of Jacky’s Burrito Express in Sioux Falls. Your fine work kept me going on a long, hot day.
In the infrastructure department, thanks to Barbara Poelle of IGLA for her big brain and sharp teeth.
Thanks are definitely due to the fine folks at Putnam. My first editor, Sara Minnich, has stepped away from publishing, and she will be missed by me and many other writers. My new editor, Danielle Dieterich, stepped into the void with verve and panache. Thanks to Claire Sullivan, Scott Bryan Wilson, Nancy Resnick, and Steven Meditz for making this book both gorgeous and readable. And thanks to the rest of the world-class crew, including Katie Grinch, Emily Mlynek, Alexis Welby, Ashley McClay, Christine Ball, Sally Kim, Benjamin Lee, Ivan Held, and the superb PRH sales team for getting my books into the world.
Extended and enthusiastic thanks to the many wonderful independent booksellers for putting my books into readers’ hands, including (but by no means limited to) Barbara Peters of The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale and Daniel Goldin of Boswell Books in Milwaukee. Indie stores are the lifeblood of the book world, and the recommendations of these dedicated booksellers are what help bring new writers into the mainstream. As a bonus, indie stores keep your book-buying dollars—and jobs—in your community.
My deepest and most profound thanks are due, as always, to the many veterans who have spoken with me about their experiences both during and after their wars. These conversations were and are still instrumental in forming Peter’s character and attitudes—these books would not exist without you. If there’s some part of the veteran’s experience that you think I have misunderstood or not included in these books—or if you just want to tell me your story—please don’t hesitate to message me on social media. I’d love to hear from you.
I’ve also talked with far too many vets who are suffering from PTSD. Your suffering is real, and you are not alone! If you are a vet having trouble, please consider the Veteran’s Crisis Hotline at (800) 273-8255. Special thanks to reader Tim Morgan for reaching out with this suggestion, and please accept my sincere apologies for not thinking of this six books ago.
Last but not least, thanks to you, dear reader. Without you, I’d be just another whacko spinning stories in his head.
