And we’re out the door as quickly as can be. From the corner of my eye, I see a streak of a T-shirt thrown in our direction.
We’re both giggling as we race down the stairs and back to the parking lot.
“I mean—” Teddy laughs, casting a furtive glance back at the condo, “they could barely wait ’til we—” He catches my eye. Looks down.
Something tightens in my chest, but I grin. “Right?”
He’s still chuckling as he starts the car, but it’s forced. The glee gone out of it.
“Next up,” I say when he throws it in reverse, “Katie Coleman.”
As we pull out of the cul-de-sac, I look to the marsh and then to the upstairs window: the heron’s gone, but the curtain flaps in the breeze.
“What do you think?” Teddy asks as we drive past clusters of redbrick buildings. It’s still early, and the wind sends brown and yellow leaves swirling ahead of us.
“About Cade?” I stretch my fingers and stare out the passenger window. Pine trees slice through blue and green Craftsman cottages. A group of shirtless young men in matching shorts jog in a cluster up the sidewalk, arms punching, yelling to be heard above their own breaths, the cars, and the tap-tap-tap of 808s.
I lean my head back. “Not our guy.” I sigh. “Too preoccupied—I’d say right now he only has one thing on his mind, and it’s not running over his roommate.”
“Maybe.” Teddy drums his fingers on the steering wheel. “Or maybe the whole girlfriend-sharing thing pissed him off. Or maybe Jay actually tried something with Sam.”
“They could both be in on it,” I offer, “provide each other alibis. Even if the roommate was there—she wouldn’t know for sure Cade was in the bedroom…” I imagine Samantha faking sex noises and laugh.
Teddy grins, too. “Seems like a lot of effort though for two people who’d rather be—you know…”
I meet his gaze and look away.
“Did you catch his face when he talked about the dream girl?” I ask, keeping my eyes on the side window.
Teddy nods and signals, veering left onto to Milledge. “Could be pissed—especially if the brothers had been hassling Samantha, and then Jay’s all about changing the rules.”
I hadn’t thought of that. “Yeah, Samantha, too. Could she talk Cade into murder, you think?”
“Could have—especially if Katie was getting special treatment all of a sudden.”
