Chapters (29)
Oliver shuffles through his notes. Teddy is still stone-faced, his eyes on Garrett. I don’t think he’s moved at all in the last five minutes. And I’m not sure if that’s for Garrett’s benefit or for mine.
“There’s no Colton listed as a member of Kappa Phi Omicron.”
“Yeah, well.” Garrett rubs his hand over his face. His eyes are bloodshot. “He wouldn’t be, would he? Didn’t make it.” There’s a mixed note of disgust and pride in his voice.
“He didn’t make it,” Oliver repeats, and I know we’re both wondering if we need to be looking for another body.
“Through hell week,” Garrett says quickly, suddenly understanding how it sounds.
“So what happened to him?”
Garrett shrugs. “I don’t know. That night—in the basement—he freaked out—completely lost his shit. Called all the brothers ‘assholes.’ We didn’t see him after that.”
And just like that—this other boy who’d been in the horrorscape with them was erased from Kappa Phi Omicron. No one to catch him during his trust fall. No bonds tight enough to hold these would-be brothers together.
And there’s something else, too—there in the way Garrett says “we.” Victory, maybe even defiance. We earned it, his look says, he didn’t. We’re not victims, despite what you found in the basement, he is. Colton. The loser who didn’t make it.
It takes another five interviews to get the full story on hell week.
