Lynell throws her hands in the air, shaking her head. “Don’t look at me. I had the letter memorized. One of you can figure out the letter values.”
“Where can we get a copy of the game?” Daniel asks.
Before either Zach or Lynell can reply, a shrill ringing punctures the air. All three of them flinch, and Zach stands to grab the burner phone from the counter behind them. He squints down at it with a deep frown.
“Mother Adella!” Lynell says, her heart dropping into her gut. She jumps up and grabs the phone from Zach’s hand. He protests but she ignores him and flips the phone open, holding it to her ear. “Hello?”
Mother Adella answers on the other end. “Rachel?” she asks, using Lynell’s fake name.
“Yes. Mother Adella, what is it?” Lynell looks back at Daniel, who circles the table to stand next to her. He leans in so he can hear Mother Adella as well.
“I wanted to let you know that there was a man who came today asking about Anna.”
Lynell sways on her feet, and Daniel grabs her and takes the phone from her when she feels her body freeze and her heart turn to stone.
“What?” he asks, speaking into the phone. “Who?”
“He didn’t give a name. But he was very unpleasant. He had a photo of you and called you Lynell.” Lynell flinches. There goes her anonymity. “I told him there’s never been a resident named Lynell here,” Mother Adella continues. “He left when I didn’t give him any further information.”
Lynell’s hands relax but the tension stays tight in her legs. “Thank you, Mother Adella,” she says. Just because this man left doesn’t mean he won’t come back. Clearly this means Eric knows about Anna and it’s just a matter of time until they find her.

Zach follows Daniel and Lynell out of the apartment, yelling at them to slow down. “It could be a trap!” he shouts as Daniel rushes down the steps, taking them three at a time. “He probably forced her to make that call.”
“No one makes Mother Adella do anything she doesn’t want to do,” Lynell says, circling the car to the passenger side. “If she called us, it was of her own volition.”
“All the more reason to stop and think. If my father knows about Anna, he’ll use this to lure you in.”
Lynell turns to Zach, one hand still on the passenger’s side door. “Stop and think? That’s our daughter, Zach! I’m not going to let some mad man go after her without trying to save her first.”
“How are you going to save her from one of his cells?” Zach says, holding the door open after Lynell climbs in the car.
“Close the door, Zach,” Lynell says, glaring up at him.
“Please, I’m begging you. Think this through.”
“Move, Zach!” Daniel shouts from behind the wheel.
“Danny!”
“Zach, I swear to whoever the hell is out there, if you don’t move right now, I will run you over.”
