“Girl, you goin’ to hurt yourself. You let Auntie cheer for both of us. Er, for the three of us.” Gabriela smiled, patting Angel’s pregnant belly before screaming at the top of her lungs for the eight-year-old running the bases. They both cheered when Jose slid home. But it was Duke who really made a spectacle of himself, hoisting the grinning kid onto his shoulders, jogging with him back to the dugout like Jose had just won them the World Series.
Well, my baby did just make his first home run. Angel smiled. Who better to celebrate with him than the Duke—his new coach, who had new pins in his ankle and a year of physical therapy under his belt. And, of course, he was also Jose’s new daddy. Her son and the retired pitcher were two peas in a pod, and Angel couldn’t be happier. Duke came to as close to perfect as a man can get.
“Aren’t you going to be late for work? You need a ride?”
“No. The company is sending a car.”
“Well, lah-dee-dah.”
“The company” was a new nonprofit research center for childhood asthma, under the umbrella of the National Pediatric Association. Duke was the center’s spokesperson, with Jose and Willis at his side most of the time. It was a family affair—Angel was a nurse at the research center’s medical complex. The name on the building was The Kinley Smith Asthma Clinic.
Angel rubbed her belly with satisfaction, breathed deeply to take in the smell of cut grass and damp earth, and reveled in the perfect moment.
A charming, multicultural, Pride and Prejudice-inspired romantic comedy from celebrity Evelyn Lozada and Holly Lorincz.
