KHADIM: That’s not what I asked you.
DANIELSON: It didn’t turn me on if that’s what you’re asking.
KHADIM: That’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking how many times you watched it.
DANIELSON: I had to be sure.
KHADIM: Of what?
DANIELSON: I had to be sure they were Sheffield students. This is my job! It’s not always pleasant, it’s not always something I want to do. But I do my job.
KHADIM: Yeah. Pride of work is pride of self.
DANIELSON: It sure is.
KHADIM: Pride is a sin.
Beat. Danielson starts to respond. Doesn’t.
Then . . .
DANIELSON: You didn’t know Lia.
KHADIM: Yes. I did.
DANIELSON: Not before you came here, not before this year, she was a good student. She was an exemplary . . .
(more to himself; with grief) What happens in this world?
(beat) I could never understand why she would do something like that. To be famous, she told me. To get attention. Maybe get on a TV show. How do you get through to someone like that?
KHADIM: I don’t know, pop in the sex tape again? Give it another look?
DANIELSON: There’s no handbook for this sort of thing! The girl made a pornographic video of herself and then distributed it throughout the school.
KHADIM: And you liked it.
DANIELSON: I absolutely did not.
KHADIM: Where’s your wife? Where’s Miss Klein?
It doesn’t look good when your own wife up and quits her job here and leaves you.
Hot Miss Klein.
DANIELSON: Is that the best you got?
That is old news, Khadim.
KHADIM: It’s not old news to me.
DANIELSON: It’s old news! You don’t know anything about Miss Klein. She wasn’t my wife. She was my fiancée. And she left me because she left me. And she quit her job here because she quit. And it didn’t have anything to do with Lia Winston.
KHADIM: Yeah. And then they hired Dr. Hodges because she was black.
(beat) The rumor, the word on the street? Miss Klein got up in the middle of the night and found you watching it, alone, in the dark.
And she couldn’t marry someone like that. Someone like you.
DANIELSON: Yeah, rumors are fantastic, aren’t they?
(beat) Lia talked about you.
Khadim doesn’t expect this.
KHADIM: To you?
DANIELSON: To me.
KHADIM: Well, what . . .
She wouldn’t . . .
(beat) What did she say?
DANIELSON: She said you were sweet.
Khadim looks away.
KHADIM: She didn’t say that.
DANIELSON: That’s what she said.
KHADIM: She was lying.
DANIELSON: Yeah, I think so too.
I think, that kid ain’t sweet. He looks like a con man.
He looks like a wolf.
And you try to look like a sheep, Khadim, you really do. But I see you. The Arab transfer student from Eagleton Academy.
KHADIM: Can I go now?
DANIELSON: No.
KHADIM: Why not?
DANIELSON: I am not done with you yet.
KHADIM: (gets up) I’m done with you.
DANIELSON: Sit your ass down.
