KHADIM: He didn’t say anything to me.

DANIELSON: Nobody said anything to you, did they?

Khadim shrugs.

DANIELSON: That’s the difference between them and me.

He looks back at the flute.

DANIELSON: She was something else, wasn’t she? Lia? She was a prodigy. She came here, years ago, to the high school when she was in the sixth grade. I’ll never forget it. She played with our orchestra, this little kid, playing with the big kids. I remember it. I remember thinking, oh sweetheart, stay that way. Sometimes you look at kids and . . .

Huh.

She played so well. It was Bach.

You like music, Khadim?

KHADIM: No. I hate music. I hate music and birds and all the things that you love.

DANIELSON: It’s not about what I love, it’s about what I consider sacred. I consider this school sacred. I consider my position in this school sacred.

What do you consider sacred?

KHADIM: Nothing.

DANIELSON: Were you close with Lia?

KHADIM: I’m not talking about Lia to you.

DANIELSON: Why not?

KHADIM: Because . . . because . . .

DANIELSON: Because why?

KHADIM: It’s none of your business, okay?

DANIELSON: She was your friend.

KHADIM: Yes. I was close to her.

DANIELSON: Were you surprised when you found out?

KHADIM: Found out what?

DANIELSON: When you found out.

Beat.

KHADIM: Why would you even ask me that?

DANIELSON: Why’d you buy her a flute?

KHADIM: She needed one.

DANIELSON: Generous gift.

KHADIM: I’m a generous guy.

DANIELSON: A lot of good a flute does a dead girl, huh? Did you keep the receipt?

KHADIM: Fuck you.

DANIELSON: Why’d you buy her a flute? Were you sorry about something? Did you hurt her feelings?

KHADIM: Don’t talk to me about her.

DANIELSON: Why not? Will I hurt your feelings?

KHADIM: Give it back to me. I want it back.

DANIELSON: You want, you want, you want, Khadim wants!

KHADIM: (on the verge of tears) She was my best friend.

DANIELSON: Your “best friend” is dead.

She killed herself.

Why?

Why’d she do it, Khadim?

KHADIM: You think I know?

DANIELSON: What do you know?

KHADIM: You tell me! What about your shit, man?

You think everyone in this school doesn’t talk about you? You were so close with Lia . . . why don’t you explain to me what happened? Maybe it had something to do with her sex tape.

(beat) Oh, I’m sorry, is that off limits? I don’t know why. Everyone knows you were a big fan of Lia Winston’s sex tape. Lia and the wrestling team. And you were a wrestler too! Do you still have your own copy?

DANIELSON: It was brought to my attention. I dealt with it. It was my job.

KHADIM: Oh, it was your job! That’s interesting. How many times did you watch it?

No answer.

KHADIM: Simple question. How many times did you watch Lia getting fucked by four guys on the wrestling team?

DANIELSON: I was stunned by that thing.
