DANIELSON: Well, do you have birds in one of those lockers?
KHADIM: Why don’t you go look and see?
DANIELSON: I looked.
KHADIM: Find any birds?
DANIELSON: No.
KHADIM: There you go.
DANIELSON: What are you doing with bird antibiotics and PVC piping?
KHADIM: I’m not doing anything with any of them. My locker is Zero-Zero-Zero. I told you I don’t have any other lockers.
DANIELSON: So none of the other stuff in any of those lockers is yours down there.
KHADIM: Nope.
DANIELSON: I guess I was wrong. I guess I just made a mistake.
KHADIM: Yep.
DANIELSON: It’s a marketplace, huh? And Khadim has the clothing outlet. I should try to find the other merchants. The PVC merchant? The bottled-water guy? The Bird Pharmacist?
KHADIM: Yeah, Dr. Danielson. Now you’re on the right track.
They stare at each other. Danielson goes into his drawer and takes out what looks like a slender black suitcase.
DANIELSON: Because I found this, too.
Khadim stares at it. Everything changes and Danielson knows it.
KHADIM: You can’t . . .
Give that to me.
DANIELSON: Oh, but it’s not yours, Khadim.
I found this in another locker. It wasn’t in your locker.
Khadim reaches for it, but Danielson puts his hand on it and holds it against against the desk. He holds it still as Khadim tries to pull it away.
DANIELSON: Let. Go.
Khadim does, and walks away.
KHADIM: That doesn’t have anything to do with anything, it’s private. Just give it . . . give it back.
Danielson watches him and then flips open the two latches. He opens the case and looks at what’s inside.
He takes out one-third of a flute.
DANIELSON: It’s brand new.
KHADIM: I know it’s brand new.
I bought it for her.
DANIELSON: For Lia.
KHADIM: (turning to look at him) Yeah. For Lia.
DANIELSON: You bought her a new flute.
KHADIM: The flute she had was shit.
Danielson looks at it. Khadim, from across the room, looks at it too. They are, for a moment, both lost in thought.
Danielson puts it back, latches the case, and looks at the other stuff.
DANIELSON: So? This other stuff? All yours.
KHADIM: What do you want? You guys gave me my own suite. What am I supposed to do? Not take advantage of this?
The Arab transfer student from Eagleton. Put him in the basement. Put him in the ghetto away from everyone else.
Well, suck a dick. I’m an entrepreneur. I made the ghetto my business.
DANIELSON: So you sell all this stuff.
KHADIM: Yeah.
DANIELSON: What an enterprising young man.
KHADIM: Yeah.
DANIELSON: How much do you pull in?
KHADIM: Between three-fifty and four a week. Five around the holidays.
DANIELSON: Why? You’re rich. Your family is wealthy.
KHADIM: Money is money.
DANIELSON: I guess so.
KHADIM: I like to sell things.
DANIELSON: Clearly. And the PVC? What’s that about?
KHADIM: I don’t know. Science project.
DANIELSON: What science project?
KHADIM: Something about water.
