Morrow covered her mouth with her hand as she absorbed the information, then glanced to Weggnor’s office. No way did she want to deal again with Mr. Tenuous who’d retired on the job. One thing working for her was the fact Loften was in custody.

How am I going to play this? I need to get around Weggnor.

She picked up her phone and called her friend in admin.

“Hi, Muriel, this is Terri. I’m planning some courses and vacation and need to know Sebastian’s schedule for supervisor sign-offs. Do you know the next time he’s off and who’s my go-to person?”

“Hold on, sweetie, I’ll check.” A keyboard clicked. “In two days, Sebastian will take a week. Your go-to is Scott Wood.”

“That’s great. Thanks.”

“Anytime.”

Morrow tented her hands before her face.

A couple of days would be all right. She’d wait and present her information to Scott, a hard-core agent.

In the meantime, she’d just have to pray Loften didn’t get bail.

Jeff had got to the office early and was seated at his desk.

But he wasn’t there, not mentally.

He barely remembered driving to the Coral Cloud Tower downtown, had hardly touched his coffee and couldn’t focus on today’s upcoming development sessions for the South American project.

All of that had been eclipsed by his pending meeting.

What’s the “important confidential matter” with Foster and Leland? Is it Vida? Did she go to them?

If she did, was he ready? What was his plan? Tell them the truth? That he’d refined Vida’s concept. Have them talk to Cleveland about the disaster she had been and continues to be.

It wasn’t that simple, was it?

Jeff took a breath, placed his hands flat on his desk.

He tried to relax to be ready for the meeting, but he was consumed by Vida’s intention to ruin him. Yesterday, in revealing to Lisa as much as he did, he’d dismissed her fear that Vida was linked to Loften. The truth was he had the exact same concern. Vida had mentioned criminal friends. Her words came back to him.

When you slip into the gutter like I did, you meet all kinds of people with all kinds of connections willing to help you for a little quid pro quo, you know, a little something for something.

Other tentacles of Vida’s threats wriggled across his mind.

You know what you did. What we did.

He had no idea what she was talking about. Yes, she was a bit of a seductress, a tease. But it had never gone anywhere with him. Was she implying they’d had an affair? That was insane because nothing had ever happened between them.

Ever.

Not at work. And he’d only seen her at a few social gatherings he’d gone to, most of them with Lisa.

So what else could Vida have?
