Chapters (103)
“Wow, you’re every girl’s dream, aren’t you, Clete?” Bogan said.
“Did you have unprotected sex with her?” Cruz was taking notes.
“You don’t have to answer,” Ellsworth said.
“The answer is no,” Loften said.
“When’s the last time you saw Vida?” Bogan asked.
“Before I was arrested in Palm Mirage Creek. I saw her at the motel.”
Bogan leaned closer to him. “You’re lying. You saw her after you escaped. You tracked her down and killed her because you got off on it, just like you did with the others.”
Loften was silent.
“Mr. Loften.” Morrow had her notebook open. “Why did you target the home of Jeff Taylor, Ms. Warren’s former coworker, and attack his wife? This is something you admit to.”
“You can refuse to answer that,” Ellsworth said.
“I’ll answer. I did it for Vida. I mean, we had a relationship. She knew my line of work was breaking into houses, doing what I do. So she asked me to break in to the Taylors’ home, to throw a scare into them.”
“For what purpose?” Morrow asked.
Loften shook his head. “She wanted to get a job with her old company so she could get her kid back. She thought she could lean on this guy she knew from Cleveland. I guess she had a little thing with him in the past. Who knows? The woman was wired different. She said she’d pay me down the road. I said paying me with sex was good enough. I cased the Taylor place in Palm Creek. They didn’t have a home-security system. And when I saw how hot the guy’s wife was, well…”
“That was the reason?” Morrow said.
Loften said, “Yup.”
“Why take pictures of Vida Warren’s son in Boca Raton?” Morrow asked.
“For Vida. I said if things didn’t work out jobwise and custodywise, I would help her with a parental abduction, and we could disappear in Canada somewhere.”
“You’re just the best boyfriend ever,” Bogan sneered.
“Vida was crazy, but she was hot, and I had a thing for her, you know.”
“Right, just look how choked up you are over her death,” Reddick said.
Loften’s chains jingled as he shrugged. “That’s life.”
“Can you explain something?” Morrow said. “Why do you collect women’s underwear and carry condoms when you break in to their homes?”
“Taking things for keepsakes is my weakness, my addiction, my hobby, whatever you want to call it. I go online. I shop and have sex with the pretty women I meet.”
“You mean, you hunt for vulnerable women,” Bogan said. “You stalk them, break in to their homes and rape them.”
