  39. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

And so far, it had been fun. He liked the house. Johnny was quite busy, because he had Annie, but Jack still saw him a fair bit, and it was good that he lived nearby. And he did like the pubs and the climbing wall. And when the weather got better, Jack was going to get a bike and start cycling to work. And work was OK. He liked having somewhere to go every weekday morning, and all the free fruit and vegetables. He enjoyed having money go into his bank account every month. It wasn’t a lot of money – some people in London must have a lot of money, a dizzying amount of money, in order to live in the big houses near the office in Bermondsey – but he liked feeling like he was making his own way. On payday, on the last Friday of the month, he would always go to the pub with his colleagues, and he felt happy when he thought of those numbers in the bank and that he could have a third pint if he wanted to.

Plus, they got free lunch most days. Sometimes, Jack would go downstairs with Flora to collect the crates from the man with the van. Flora was helping out on the social team, with Deepti, and Jack would talk to her a bit about her work. Flora had just graduated and was living back in her parents’ house in somewhere called Angel, which was in north London (‘Angel of the north,’ Jack had said, though he didn’t think Flora had got it) and so it didn’t matter that she wasn’t getting paid. That was how Jack had started helping with the memes, every so often – he and Flora would message each other funny things all day and sometimes she’d put them on the Green Genie Facebook or Instagram accounts.
