Sabin smiled. “Life partner. It’s only a ten-year contract. And, no, being the male doesn’t make any difference. Lauren owns the place in DC. Having two homes gives us some time apart. Every relationship needs space, right? Let me show you around.”
They walked through the house. “This is the master bedroom. The guest room is upstairs—you can put your stuff up there. Here’s the kitchen. A bit out of date. Well, not for you.” They smiled at each other. “The breakfast room. The utility room behind here.” He opened a door into it. “And through here”—they walked through a pair of swinging gates—“the living room.”
Abby stared at a teenager lying on the couch. She appeared to be asleep, but Abby guessed she was actually in VR.
“Who’s that?”
“That—that is Lauren’s daughter, Chloe. She’s staying here for the summer while we go back and forth to DC.”
“Lauren has a daughter? She didn’t mention that.”
“Yeah. Sometimes she doesn’t. She had her with her previous life partner.”
Chloe opened her eyes, startled. “Hey. You made me jump.”
Sabin walked inside the room and took a seat. Abby followed him.
“Chloe, this is your…your cousin, actually. Abby Caldwell.”
Chloe looked at her but didn’t speak.
“Hi,” Abby said. “Pleased to meet you.”
“Uh-huh.”
Sabin shook his head. “Were you working on your final project for biology? That’s due soon, right?”
Chloe shrugged her shoulders. “I was having sex with Jerod.” She looked at Abby. “My boyfriend.”
Abby felt appalled. The girl looked so young and innocent. Young women in her village were married off at an early age, but this…this felt different.
She watched Sabin shoot Chloe a look. Chloe made a face in response. “What? It’s nothing to hide.”
“Lauren and I have asked you not to do that in the living room.”
Chloe sat up. “What difference does it make? It’s not like you can see anything. You can’t even tell what I’m doing.”
Sabin sighed. “All right. Let’s move on. Chloe, would you take Abby’s suitcase upstairs?”
“Why can’t she take it?”
“Because she’s our guest. Would you do it, please?”
Chloe rolled her eyes. “All right.” She walked to the foyer.
Abby watched her trudge upstairs with the suitcase. She turned to Sabin. “How exactly do people touch and hear and taste things in virtual reality?”
