“You’re probably wondering what this has to do with you. We know how strange this may sound, but in our dreams Nonny and I believe God revealed to us the person he will use to rebuild the Christian church in America. We don’t know how this will happen, or when, or why this person has been chosen for such a hard task. But God’s choice is clear to us. That person is you, Abby.”
Kate looked over to see Abby’s jaw drop.
“We believe Jesus has destined you to reignite Christianity in the States. I wish we could tell you more. I wish we knew more. But this is all we have, and God has a good reason for that. I’m sure he wants you to look to him to direct you.”
Her grandmother spoke. “Abby, life is full of possibilities and challenges, some of which seem overwhelming at the time. No matter when you view this message, I’m sure our words will sound crazy. But please…talk to God about it. He knows how he’ll use you. Lord willing, we will be at your side at that time, feeling very privileged to share this journey with you.”
Her grandfather smiled warmly. “You always have our deepest love and daily prayers for your safety and for your closeness to God.”
Her grandmother added, “We love you and can’t wait for the day when we can give you big hugs, darling girl. Bye-bye.”
The message ended. Abby sat silently, a stunned look frozen on her face.
“Wow…what can you possibly say after that?” Kate said, then immediately regretted saying anything at all.
Abby slowly shook her head. “I don’t know…”
Kate turned off the message; the image of Abby’s grandparents disappeared. For a moment Abby seemed ready to cry.
“Are you okay, Abby?”
Abby didn’t respond. Her face seemed unusually pale. When she finally spoke, there was both resignation and resolution in her words. “I have to go there,” she said, nearly in a whisper.
“Where…to the U.S.?”
Abby nodded.
“Abby, that message is sixteen years old. How do you…Well, how much did you know about your grandparents when you were growing up?”
“I don’t remember meeting them. I just remember the packages Nonny sent before our village was closed. I was very small, but I loved a fuzzy pink bear she sent, and I slept with it for years.” She seemed lost in the past for a moment. “Mostly, I knew they were strong Christians. My father talked about what it was like being raised by them, how God and the Bible were central to their family. My father was close to his parents, and he trusted them completely.” She shrugged. “My grandfather was some kind of scientist, but I never knew exactly what he did. Beyond that…”
