  58. Author’s Note

Ben glanced toward the sun. Time was getting away from them. The cabin provided a temporary haven at best. “Abby, we have to go. We can’t risk staying here any longer.”

“Ben…” She bit on her lower lip.

“You can do it. Just fly low, behind me. I’ll go slow.”

She looked up toward the tops of the trees. “Okay. Let’s go.”

Ben rose off the ground and hovered at fifteen feet. Abby took a deep breath and followed him. They passed the tree line. Ben flew on ahead, then spun around to watch Abby’s progress. She clipped herself on a branch and had to right herself to avoid slamming into other trees. Finally she settled into level flight, twenty feet above the trees. They flew south. In a few minutes they reached a main road. Ben peered to their left. In the distance several cars were parked alongside the road in a haphazard pattern. The police.

They rode the jets toward downtown Boston. Ben could see the city center on the horizon. Thirty-five minutes later they hovered over Boston Common. Ben motioned Abby down. Her landing was rough. She stumbled forward, her ankle gave way, and she crumpled to the ground.

Ben was immediately beside her. “Are you okay?”

She gathered herself in a moment. “I’ll make it. Until now, I thought automated cars were scary.”

Ben placed the packs in two canvas bags as he glanced at several passersby staring at them. “We need to go.”

He carried the bags as they walked to the train station. Abby limped behind him.

Ben scanned the station as Abby bought her ticket. When they got to the platform, she leaned close to Ben and spoke in a hushed voice. “You’re sure the police won’t be waiting for me when I arrive in DC?”

“No. They have no way of identifying you. Even if they did, DC is where those in charge want you so you can testify. You’ll be under their protection again.”

“What about you? Are you taking a later train?”

“No. I assaulted two guys. If I got on this thing, they’d identify me.”

She arched a brow. “So are you coming back on the jet pack?”

He smiled and shook his head. “No, hardly. These things have limited range. I’ll make it back to DC, don’t worry. I have to check into something here first. You and Creighton can expect me by Thursday.”

The train pulled into the station. Abby turned toward Ben. “Thank you. For everything.” She hugged him.

“I’ll see you back in Washington,” he said.
