- About the Author
Joanna turned to Willow. “Are you ready to give a statement?”
Willow sipped her coffee and nodded. Her hands trembled.
Joanna pulled a recorder from her pocket and placed it between her and Willow.
“This is Detective Joanna Lee interviewing Willow Lennox at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 27.” She looked at Willow. “Can you state your name for the record?”
Willow moistened her lips. “Willow Lennox.”
“Good. Now please tell me everything that’s happened, in your own words.”
We all listened while Willow recounted what she’d told me earlier, including the envelope of photographs she’d taken to the police station. Kade caught my eyes, and I could see how pissed he was about the entire situation. My friend hated women being endangered more than anything else. It had gotten him into trouble in the past.
“Do you have any idea who your brother might owe money to?” Joanna asked.
“No.” Willow seemed to shrink in her chair. “I’m sorry, I wish I did. I know Ronan has been looking into him. He’d have more idea than me.”
Joanna nodded and glanced at me. “We’ll want copies of any information you’re able to share.”
“Zeke will provide our file on him,” I replied.
She turned back to Willow. “Is there anyone you’ve noticed Tom spending a lot of time with? Meetings at the office or late-night phone calls?”
Willow scowled. “I’m not around him much outside of work, and I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary except he’s on edge and very sensitive about money.”
“Tom doesn’t talk to you about his problems?” Joanna asked. “You’re his sister. His only family.”
One of Willow’s eyes twitched. She’d hit a nerve. “I assure you, I’m aware of that, but I’m telling the truth. I don’t know who Tom might be involved with. I don’t even know where he is.”
“Come on, Willow.” Joanna leaned forward, her expression intent. “Think. You know Tom better than anyone. If he was in trouble, where would he go? Who would he turn to?”
Willow’s eyes flashed with temper. “I have no idea.”
“I don’t buy that,” Joanna pressed. “Dig deep. Does he own any real estate?”
“There’s his condo. The Lennox Securities office. I think that’s all, but it’s not as though we share confidences.”
“Why not?”
“Maybe it’s the age gap. Maybe it’s the fact I was Dad’s favorite. Or it could be just that he hates showing weakness to anyone.”
Joanna shook her head. “And if there were more to it than that?”
“If there is, then I don’t know about it.” Willow’s voice cracked, and I shifted uncomfortably, exchanging a look with Kade. She’d been through enough today without an inquisition. “I’ve told you everything I can.”
Joanna met her gaze levelly. “You’re sure there’s nothing else?”
“My brother clearly doesn’t trust me, and he doesn’t want me involved in running the business. So yes, I’m sure there’s nothing else.” Air hissed between her clenched teeth. “As I’ve said, I have no clue where he might be, or who he might be with. That’s God’s honest truth, and wishing I knew more won’t make it happen.”
