- About the Author
She shook her head. “I don’t think I could make myself eat anything. The coffee will be fine.”
A buzz sounded overhead, alerting me that someone else had entered the foyer via the elevator. I rested a hand over the holster of my gun and shoved Willow behind me. It was probably the police, but better safe than sorry. The door from reception inched open, and a badge appeared around the corner, held up by someone who knew better than to surprise me.
“It’s Detective Lee.”
I relaxed. “Come in, Jo.”
Joanna Lee lowered her badge and entered the office. Her olive-toned face didn’t crease into a smile. She wasn’t the type for anything as informal as that. Detective Lee was by-the-book.
“Heard you had some trouble, King.”
“We did. I was just taking Willow to my office. Why don’t you come through?”
Joanna nodded, her long, black ponytail bobbing over her shoulder. “I left two officers outside to shut off access to the area. The crime scene techs will be here soon to check for evidence, but considering it’s a busy street, I doubt they’ll find much.” She gestured to a uniformed young woman behind her. “This is Officer Matthews. She’s trained in evidence collection and will process Ms. Lennox. After that, I’ll take her statement.”
Officer Matthews smiled and raised a hand. I lifted my chin, acknowledging her. The kid looked no older than twenty, but Joanna didn’t suffer fools, so if she was here with her, then she must have been good at her job.
I led them to my office and gestured for them to sit at the table along the wall. I dragged my chair around the desk to join them. Before they could begin, Kade returned with coffee and set it in front of Willow.
She smiled gratefully. “Thank you.”
“No problem.” His cheeks reddened, and he dropped into a seat at the table.
Joanna raised an eyebrow. “Are we expecting anyone else?”
“Zeke is getting the security footage,” I told her.
“We’ll need a copy.”
“Of course.”
She turned to Matthews. “Would you like to take Ms. Lennox somewhere more private for processing?”
“Here is fine,” Willow interjected, glancing my way. “I feel safer with everyone around.”
“Okay, then.” Joanna indicated for Matthews to begin.
We sat in silence while Matthews photographed Willow and checked her body for evidence. Willow sat stoically throughout as though having a stranger touch her was nothing new.
“Are you okay?” I asked at one point.
She raised her eyes to mine and shrugged. “It has to be done. No point making a fuss.”
It was a pragmatic reply, but I couldn’t help feeling that she was bottling everything up, and I didn’t like it.
Shortly after, Zeke came in with his laptop and passed Joanna a flash drive. “Here is the recording.”
“Thank you, Ezekiel.”
He winced, and I noticed Kade hide a smile.
Finally, the poking and prodding ended, and Matthews handed Willow a tracksuit and a plastic bag to put her clothes in because they’d become evidence. She took the items and left the office, returning minutes later in the shapeless gray outfit. She handed Matthews the bag and sat.
