It was a sombre afternoon in Kirkby Abbey, but at least the sun was shining.
James and Annie were among about fifty people who had gathered in the churchyard. Several reporters and a TV camera crew were also there to record the latest development in a story that the public couldn’t seem to get enough of.
After William Nash’s arrest came his appearance before a magistrate where he was charged with the murders of Robert and Mary Bateman. He was remanded in custody and was now awaiting a trial date.
What he’d revealed about the deaths of Simon and Amanda Roth hit the headlines a few days later and Cumbria Constabulary had already been approached by a BBC producer who wanted to make a documentary about the case.
Each of these events attracted more attention than the arrest of Andrew Sullivan, and James noted with a degree of pleasure that even his remand hearing, where he was charged with murder and the attempted murder of a police officer, failed to make it onto the mainstream news bulletins.
However, James knew that today’s poignant service, during which Megan Roth had been laid to rest next to the graves of her real parents, would make the evening news.
Giles Keegan had volunteered to read the eulogy after Robert Bateman’s brother said he couldn’t handle it, and Keegan used the opportunity to also make a public apology on behalf of himself and the Cumbria police for not uncovering the truth twenty-four years ago. He told the assembled mourners that the skeletal remains of the real Charlotte Bateman were to be cremated along with the bodies of her parents in the coming weeks.
The ceremony lasted almost an hour and when it was over James and Annie headed for home, choosing not to go for a drink in one of the village pubs with their friends and neighbours.
Instead, they planned to start working on the baby’s room in the hope that it would take their minds off what had been another dreadful day in Kirkby Abbey.
