She remembered Ned putting it on in the background, while Anna hung sheets on the washing line or sat in the garden reading a book, smiling at her daughters as they frolicked happily in the summer sunshine. He hadn’t played on vinyl obviously, but on tape perhaps? Penny’s heart soared as right then, she recognised Here Comes The Sun as the soundtrack to those days, halcyon times in her family’s past.
And now that he had some of his records back, Ned was humming it again.
Tears came to her eyes as she went to her father and enveloped him in a huge hug. She didn’t care that he didn’t go in for overt physical displays of affection; Penny recognised that this was precisely Ned’s way of showing affection, appreciation even.
And it made her even more determined to push on and track down every last one of the remaining records.
But all morning Penny’s mind was elsewhere – on a number of topics including, but not limited to, what to say to the man in County Meath they were visiting, to try to make him part with his Revolver album. Then she wondered what Elle had planned for the hotel while they were away, how much more money she would have to spend on her quest to reunite her dad with his albums, and finally, the way she was feeling about Colin’s return. When presented all together in one never-ending stream of consciousness – the thoughts were a lot to deal with.
But all too soon she realised she had the opportunity to only focus on one thing, at least for a little while. They had arrived at their destination.
Pulling into a long driveway, Penny peered through the trees at the little cottage that was set back away from the main road. Looking around, she wondered how Colin had managed to track this person down.
‘We’re here,’ she said, getting out. ‘What was this guy’s name again?’
‘Joe Armstrong,’ he confirmed. Ned also got out, gave Colin a warning glance and started heading toward the house.
‘OK if Dad and I do this one ourselves?’ she said, feeling a little mean for leaving him out, but she knew he would understand.
Colin nodded. ‘Of course.’
Penny nervously approached the house. Now she appreciated a little what Elle must have been feeling when she was going around the town asking for help. But this was so much worse; this was engaging a complete stranger. Still, she couldn’t back down, not with Ned standing right beside her.
Joe Armstrong looked at the two strangers standing on his doorstep. ‘We’re here to talk about a possible business transaction with you,’ Penny began without preamble. ‘We were told that you might be in possession of a first edition Beatles album, Revolver. And we hoped that you might be willing to sell it.’
Armstrong shook his head. ‘I’m not interested in selling.’
