Teju goes to touch her. Yetunde, kindly, stops him.

I’ve really fucked things up with Leah! You’d love her I think. I wish you could have met. I wish I’d told you about her sooner. Maybe if you’d known, it would have made you feel less alone. Did you feel alone? I don’t know how to show her I’m serious. I wouldn’t have cared what Mum and Dad said. If I had your blessing! That’s the funny thing. If I’d known. It wouldn’t have mattered.

Pause.

Yetunde Teju? It’s not too late.

Teju Yes. I vote to bless the marriage. I take my stone and I cast it down for love.

Adebisi Praise the gods!

Teju For the life I never had.

Yetunde But the life that could be.

Beat.

Next time.

Babatunde That is very nice but . . . the wedding’s off. All our dilly-dallying here has scuppered things for them in Aiye. It’s not happening. How can we bless them if they’re not getting married?

Adebisi Is there anything we can do?

Yetunde starts stamping.

The same rhythm we have heard from her before.

Slowly, the Ancestors all join in. Following Yetunde, they surround Tara. The rhythm reaches a climax and suddenly stops.

Tara I don’t know if this is you Uncle T. But I feel like that star’s winking at me.

The Ancestors breathe in. Then, they breathe out. Leah enters.

Leah (beat) Who are you talking to?

Tara No one.

Beat.

Hi! I didn’t expect to see you. It hasn’t been a week yet –

Leah Your dad came to see me.

Tara What?

Leah He booked an appointment at my firm.

Tara At work?

Leah Yeah!

Tara When?

Leah This morning.

Tara But he was flying today.

Leah He said! He was worried he’d miss his flight but he apparently talking to me was more important.

Tara Why? What did he want?

Leah He wanted to try and get us back together.

Tara Really? I’m sorry. I didn’t ask him to do that.

Leah I didn’t think you had.

Beat.

I’ve missed you.

Tara I’ve missed you too.

Leah I thought you’d be in touch again. What with your uncle –

Tara I wanted to give you some space, like you asked for.

Leah Oh. Thank you.

Beat.

Mischa doesn’t think we should get married.

Tara Mischa?

Leah Mischa thinks you’re ashamed of me. Of us –

Tara Fuck Mischa.

Leah Tara!

Tara (beat) I hate Mischa.

Leah She’s my maid of honour!

Tara She’s your ex-girlfriend!

Leah We’re lesbians. We stay friends with our ex-girlfriends. It’s normal –

Tara It is not normal.

Leah Yes it is.

Tara I’m not friends with any of my ex-girlfriends –

Leah That’s because you don’t have any ex-girlfriends!
