Tara Looks good to me.
Leah Properly.
Tara Fine.
Beat.
Where’s the High Table?
Leah All the tables are round.
Tara So?
Leah So a round table can’t fit on the stage.
Tara I’m sure we can find a rectangular table somewhere.
Leah I just . . . without your parents there. It feels . . . exposing.
Tara So they’re not on the seating plan?
Leah No. They still haven’t RSVPed.
Tara Yeah, but they were never going to RSVP.
Leah They’re not going to change their minds.
Tara They’re African, you don’t even need to be invited to a wedding in Nigeria. You just turn up.
Leah I don’t think they will babe.
Tara Well, you don’t know that.
Leah I do. They’re not coming. We need to move forward as though they’re not coming. Or else it’ll hold us back.
Tara I need to finish this.
Leah I’ve tried talking about it and you keep brushing it off. And you don’t help! With any of the wedding stuff. I feel like I’m doing all of this alone.
Tara I’ve been busy!
Leah You’ve been waiting for them to call. And it’s not going to happen.
Tara Leah, can you just leave it?
Leah Do you even want to marry me? Do you even want this?
Tara (pause) Yes.
Leah You paused.
Tara So? I’m allowed to pause.
Leah Not when you’re sure.
Tara I just, I don’t know who’s going to be there on my side of the aisle. If they’re not there, if they’re really not coming, who have I got?
Leah You’ve got loads of people. All our friends!
Tara Our friends. What about mine? Me and mine.
Leah It’s not about yours or mine. It’s about us! That’s the whole point.
Tara I’m not going to have anyone standing behind me. No one’s going to be up there with me. I went shopping for my dress today. And I had no one to go with. I had to book an appointment late and Bree couldn’t miss work and I couldn’t find anything that fit right and I couldn’t decide what design I wanted and I looked in the mirror and there was no one standing behind me. There wasn’t anyone squealing or crying or drinking prosecco in the afternoon with me. I didn’t have anyone to celebrate with.
Leah You should have said.
Tara It was fine.
Leah I would have come with you.
Tara You know that’s not the same.
Leah You should have booked an appointment further in advance.
Tara Leah.
Leah Sorry.
Tara You’ve got everyone around you. Someone to walk you up the aisle.
Leah You said you didn’t want that!
Tara I do! I do want it. I thought I could do it without. But . . . what does it really mean without your family there?
Leah It means you love me and you want us to share a life.
Beat.
Tara?
Tara I can’t.
