Segun I said he’d regret it.

Beat.

Teju You threatened him? He never spoke to me again. Never. I thought it was something I’d said or something I’d done.

Segun I was trying to protect you.

Teju He never so much as looked at me again. After waking up together that day. Laughing in the morning. Then silence. Because of you –

Segun It was for the best. Teju, I mean it. God knows where you would be now if I hadn’t done it.

Teju I’d be exactly where I am.

Segun What?

Teju But with some company, maybe –

Segun You don’t know that.

Teju You want me to keep pretending –

Segun Not pretending, Teju. You don’t need to surrender to this thing. You have a choice. I’ll give you this money. Get the police off of your back.

Teju Then what?

Segun Wunmi will come around.

Teju Then what?!

Segun You just . . . keep your head down.

Teju I don’t want your money. You’re offering me a plaster when I need surgery. I need to get out. If you don’t want to help me then you can leave –

Segun I’m trying to give you five million Naira –

Teju Leave, Segun!

Segun Five million!

Teju I mean it Segun –

Segun You’re mad! Just because I won’t help you get to London.

Teju goes to the door.

Segun I flew across the world for you, with no information, barely a week’s notice. I’ve come here to help you. Like I always do! Bail you out, like I always do –

Teju (firmly) I’m asking you to leave.

Segun (beat) Alright. I’ll call you tomorrow. I’ll come by, with the money. In cash. With a good night’s sleep, your mind will change.

Teju is silent.

Goodbye.

Teju stands for a moment. Lost.

Scene Twelve

London, Tara and Leah’s home.

Tara Hey.

Leah Hi!

Tara How was your day?

Leah You missed it.

Tara What?

Leah The dance rehearsal.

Tara Shit! That was today?

Leah Yeah.

Tara I’m sorry.

Leah Where were you? I took the afternoon off work.

Tara Did you still take the lesson?

Leah No.

Tara I’m sure you could have! You needed it more than me . . .

Leah Is that supposed to be funny?

Tara What’s up with you? I’ve said I’m sorry. It’s just a dance.

Leah It’s romantic.

Tara I know babe, but it’s our wedding day. We could do the Macarena and it’d be romantic.

Leah You promised.

Tara And I’m really sorry I missed it. I’ll make it up to you.

Leah What were you doing?

Tara I was sorting wedding stuff.

Leah Did you check the seating plan?

Tara Uh . . . no. I didn’t get around to it.

Leah I left it on the table.

Tara I’ll look at it in a bit.

Leah What’s wrong with you?

Tara Nothing!

Leah Can you just check it now, please.
