Mosun No now! You are welcome. She so rarely comes over anymore. I thought there might be something wrong.

Leah No, nothing wrong!

Tara It’s actually the opposite, we wanted to tell you something. Some really good news.

Segun’s phone rings.

Segun Sorry.

Mosun Is that him?

Tara Who?

Segun No.

Tara Uncle Teju?

Segun No, it wasn’t him.

Tara Did you see him when you were in Nigeria?

Segun Yes.

Tara How was he?

Segun He’s fine. He was fine.

Mosun How is your work Leah? Aren’t you a . . . lawyer?

Leah Yeah, it’s good thanks.

Mosun I always wanted Tara to be a lawyer.

Leah I think Tara has something she wants to tell you.

Segun Who wants another drink?

Mosun I think she could dress herself up a bit more. Don’t you think? Dress like you. Catch herself a man!

Leah Don’t you have something to say?

Mosun I’m sure you’ve got yourself a fine man to spend your time with. Pretty girl like you.

Leah No actually.

Mosun You don’t have a boyfriend?

Leah (beat) No.

Mosun Are you looking?

Leah Not really.

Mosun Well, I guess you two will be old maids together then!

Leah That’s one way of putting it.

Mosun You know, some mothers would put pressure on their daughter. But not me. I just put my faith in God. The right man will come along soon.

Tara Mum.

Mosun Yes Tara?

Tara That’s what me and Leah came here to talk to you about. There’s no easy way of saying this, but I’m really happy about it and I hope you will be too.

Beat.

Leah and I are getting married.

Pause.

Segun You and . . . you?

Tara Leah. Yeah.

Segun But . . .

Tara I’ve been trying to tell you.

Segun When did this . . . ?

Leah I proposed. Nearly nine months ago.

Segun And you didn’t think to . . . ?

Leah Well, exactly.

Tara I’ve been waiting for the right time.

Leah And I’ve been telling her that there’s never going to be a right time . . .

Mosun No.

Tara (beat) What?

Mosun I said, no!

Tara We’re not asking your permission!

Mosun You said you were a bisexual.

Tara (beat) So?

Mosun We thought you would end up with a man. Get back together with Samuel.

Tara That ended years ago!

Leah Tara said she told you about us.

Tara I did!

Leah Then why are they talking about it like it’s the first time they’ve heard?

Tara I did tell them about you.

Mosun I don’t think so.

Tara I sat you down, two months after we got together, right here at this table. I told you I loved her. That being with her felt like a miracle.

Mosun I don’t remember.

Tara You can’t ignore it anymore.
