  45. A Letter from the Publisher

I think he had loved her, after his fashion. But there she stood beside him, menacing his very life. Even now I wonder if some vast anger, even jealousy, did not underlie what he did. He who had cared for her so long to die for the man who had deserted and neglected her. He may even have said it. “You always loved him, didn’t you? You never forgot him.”

“No. I never forgot him.”

That is the story. Tony has read it to this point. Now he puts it down. He sits very still for a time, staring at the fire. Then he draws a long breath. “Let’s forget it, darling. It’s over, thank God. Suppose we stop remembering and plan a bit.”

He has the blueprints ready. I put away the manuscript and settle myself to such things as plumbing and kitchen stoves and sunglass for a possible nursery in the future. From somewhere in the rear comes the odor of boiling cocoa, and soon Miss Mattie will rap at the door and I will slide off Tony’s knee.

“I thought you might like a little something to eat,” she says. “It will help you to sleep.”

It is the authentic voice of Beverly, and we bow to it.
