‘You think he wants you to find him?’

‘Maybe.’

‘Is that why you are here?’

He smiles. ‘I only know one private detective. And she’s ideally equipped for the job.’

‘I am not a private detective.’

‘You could have fooled me.’

‘And even if I was …’

‘Remember, I can prove whether Driscoll really did die in the explosion by asking the authorities to test my DNA against the remains they found on the beach. But if I did that and there was no match …’

‘They would start looking for him.’

‘Yes. And not just the authorities. So …’

‘Does your wife know about this?’

‘Not yet.’

‘But you will tell her?’

‘If and when there’s something to tell.’

‘You truly want me to start down this road? It was over. We can leave it like that. Maybe we should.’

‘I don’t think I can.’

Silence falls between them. There is much Wada could say. But, strangely, there doesn’t seem to be much point in saying any of it.

Slowly, she stands and crosses to the dark green filing cabinet in the corner. She opens the bottom drawer, takes out one of the empty manila folders stored there, returns to the desk, sits down and writes in katakana characters on the front of the folder, then again on the inner edge that will be visible when the folder is placed in the cabinet.

‘What are you doing?’ asks Nick.

‘What Kodaka-san would have done,’ Wada replies. ‘I am opening a file. On Karl-Erik Fagerholm. And the source of his money.’

ONE

It is the middle of a hot and clammy afternoon at Police Headquarters in Algiers. Superintendent Mouloud Taleb, with no pressing business requiring his attention, is content to wait until the clock reaches a respectable hour before taking his leave. At this late stage in his career conspicuous dedication to duty will gain him nothing but the suspicion of his colleagues, so he generally tries to act even more disengaged than he feels. But, even so, 3.45 is too early by anyone’s standards to be making a departure. He is going to have to sweat it out a little longer - literally so, since his office receives no cooling sea breezes and commands only an unappetising view of the blank concrete wall of the next building.
