“I know, I know,” said Ingrid. “Won’t make it any more comfortable. But let’s get going. We leave in ten minutes.”
Gottfried used the satellite link to call the bank in Zurich, then passed the phone to Ingrid. Because of the voice recognition software, she would need to give the account number and the instructions. Ingrid explained that a dump truck would arrive between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. She gave the license number and instructed that the contents be placed in her private vault. At a Swiss bank, it went without saying that absolute discretion was required. Ten minutes later, Eva drove a black car out of the entrance to the Fox’s Den, Ingrid Weiss folded into the trunk. Behind them, Gottfried drove the truck, Dietrich sitting in the passenger seat. They had, of course, changed the plates on Ingrid’s car. But that precaution, and Ingrid’s miserable ride in the trunk, proved unnecessary. Eva encountered no roadblocks or checkpoints between Oberammergau and Vaduz. Just inside Liechtenstein, she pulled over and let Ingrid out of the trunk. By 2:00 a.m. they had checked into the hotel in Vaduz, but even with a hot shower and a luxurious bed, Ingrid could not sleep. She waited up to hear from Gottfried and Dietrich.
Gottfried took a more northerly route than Eva—the farther apart the truck and Ingrid’s car, he reckoned, the better. When he had only driven for a few minutes, they had a problem. Just after turning onto the main road, he had hit a deep pothole and apparently it had damaged the fuel tank. Gottfried noticed the fuel gauge sinking rapidly and had to make a quick decision—return to Oberammergau or press on to the next service station in Saulgrub a few kilometers away. He elected to go on to Saulgrub and by a stroke of good fortune, the service station manager was still there. Patching the leak in the tank took a half hour or so and with a fresh tank of fuel, Gottfried and Dietrich drove the rest of the way to Zurich. Dietrich made up for lost time by speeding the whole way, nearly running one car off the road. Despite another short delay in Zurich, just after 3:00 a.m., well within the window Ingrid had given the bank manager, they turned from Ferkelstrasse, into the garage entrance of the Central Bank of Zurich.
“Call Weiss and tell her we’ve arrived,” said Gottfried.
